“Whyy is now the home of planphilly.org, philadelphia's nine-year-old news organization covering planning, design, and development. Planphilly transitioned from its orginial home at the university of pennsylvania and is helping deepen coverage of civic issues and promote public diaglogue about the future of the philadelphia region. Becoming part of whyy's public media operation enabled planphilly to broaden its reach beyond its web audience through radio and television reporting. Whyy began an expansion of its media labs to 27 philadelphia schools over the next three years as part of a $1.7 million project to help both students and teachers use video storytelling as an effective learning tool. A $751,000 lead gift from the william penn foundation launched the outreach effort and supports 11 of the labs. Whyy conducted a pilot project in nine philadelphia schools in the last two years, which was evaluated by research for better schools. The independent organization reported that students learned much more than basic video skills, 80 percent of the students reported gains in listening skills and 60 percent reported gains in writing effective sentences and paragraphs. Several new tv programs were produced featuring delaware. Billion mile journey, an intriguing production highlighting 50 years of ferry service between lewes, delaware and cape may, new jersey earned a first place award from the delaware press association. Two other recent productions showcased the rich and unique history of delaware: hundred mile journey and dela-where?.”
