Activity 2

Radio programming: whyy-fm's news and information format, along with whyy-hd radio arts and culture programs, offer the region a comprehensive radio service. Whyy-fm has a well-deserved reputation as a trusted source of news and information, combining such npr programs as "morning edition" and "all things considered" with reports from whyy's local news team. Whyy is also the producer of "radio times," a weekday interview and call-in program and "fresh air with terry gross," covering the popular culture and public affairs now heard by 5 million people each week on some 500 public radio stations. The weekly broadcast schedule also includes locally-produced "you bet your garden." whyy-fm is also known for compelling short features including a local version of "this i believe, the coming of age" series focusing on life transitions, "what are we thinking" gallup poll results and "skytalk" astronomy features. All of whyy's audio programming is also available on whyy.org as streaming content, podcasts or special web-only features.

Activity 3

Education services: lifelong learning has always been at the core of whyy's mission. Whyy broadcasts more than 60 hours of educational programming for children each week, and supplements that content with workshops and events featuring popular pbs kids characters and related activities. A major new initiative is the dorrance h. Hamilton public media commons at whyy, teaching community members to express themselves through digital media. Hamilton commons programs puts state-of-the-art equipment into hands of teens, teachers, senior citizens and whyy members as they learn audio and video production, shooting and lighting techniques, sound recording and digital editing. Through e-learning delaware, whyy also works with the delaware department of education and the delaware center for educational technology to provide web-based professional development that leads to gains in teachers' content knowledge, improvements in their teaching practices, and an increase in the achievement levels of their students. "whyy i like this book" encourages students to read through a contest and on-air spots.
