Mission

The association for public art (apa, formerly the fairmount park art association) commissions, preserves, interprets and promotes public art in philadelphia. Dedicated to creating a museum without walls that informs, engages and inspires diverse audiences, the apa advances opportunities for artists to contribute to the city's places and spaces. Since its establishment in 1872 as the nation's first private non-profit public organization, the apa has been a model of public art creation, preservation and community engagement. The apa thrives on continuity and is distinguished by a commitment to permanent and temporary artworks. The curatorial approach of the apa supports the integration of public art and urban design through exemplary projects, programs, digital media and advocacy efforts that connect people with public art. The apa maintains a legacy for future generations, while promoting philadelphia as a premier city for public art.

“The audit committee will review and approve the form 990 before it is sent to the board of directors. Once the board of directors has reviewed the 990, it is then filed with the irs.”

“In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, a board member must disclose the existence of the financial interest and be given the opportunity to disclose all material facts. After disclosure and after discussion with the interested person, he/she shall leave the board meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. The chairperson of the board shall if appropriate appoint a disinterested person or committee to investigate alternatives to the proposed transaction. After executing due diligence, the board shall determine whether the organization can obtain with reasonable efforts a more advantageous transaction from a person or entity that would not give rise to a conflict of interest. If a more advantageous transaction is not reasonably possible, the board shall determine by majority vote of the disinterested directors whether the transaction is in the organization's best interest and whether it is fair and reasonable. In conformity with this determination it shall make its decision as to whether to enter into the transaction. If the board has reasonable cause to believe a member has failed to disclose actual or possible conflicts of interest, it shall inform the member and afford the member an opportunity to explain the alleged failure to disclose. If, after hearing the member's response and after making further investigation, the board determines the member has failed to disclose an actual or possible conflict of interest, it shall take appropriate and corrective action.”

MAGIC CARPET: "MAGIC CARPET" BY MULTI-MEDIA ARTIST CANDY COATED WAS SELECTED AS ONE OF THE BEST PUBLIC ART PROJECTS IN THE NATION BY THE AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS AS PART OF THEIR "YEAR IN REVIEW" 2015.FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF A STUDY "MORE PARK, LESS WAY," THE APA RESPONDED TO RECOMMENDATIONS TO ANIMATE THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY AT EAKINS OVAL BY COMMISSIONING "MAGIC CARPET," FEATURED IN JULY AND AUGUST 2014 AT THE OVAL, A PROGRAM OF PHILADELPHIA PARKS & RECREATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY. THROUGH THE ARTIST'S CREATIVE INTERVENTION THIS OTHERWISE VISUALLY ORDINARY SPACE WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A HUGE MAGICAL ENVIRONMENT OF COLOR, PATTERN AND ILLUSION. ARTIST-DESIGNED DIAMOND-SHAPED SANDBOXES, FILLED WITH HOT PINK SAND AND COLORFUL GAME BOARDS WERE JUST A FEW OF THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY ATTRACTIONS THAT THOUSANDS OF VISITORS OF ALL AGES ENCOUNTERED ON THE "MAGIC CARPET." THE PUBLIC WAS INVITED TO WATCH THE WORK IN PROGRESS AND ATTEND THE GRAND OPENING. IN ADDITION, APA AND THE ARTIST HOSTED THREE WORKSHOPS ON SITE INTRODUCING PARTICIPANTS TO SCREEN PRINTING AND PARASOL PAINTING, INSPIRED BY THE "MAGIC CARPET." A PHOTO CONTEST AND MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS : AUDIO PROGRAM FEATURING THE ARTIST ROUNDED OUT PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES. SYMBIOSIS: "SYMBIOSIS," A MAJOR WORK BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST ROXY PAINE, WAS ACQUIRED BY THE APA IN 2015 FOR PERMANENT DISPLAY IN IROQUOIS PARK THROUGH A GENEROUS GRANT FROM THE DANIEL W. DIETRICH II TRUST, INC. WITH THE COOPERATION OF PHILADELPHIA'S DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION AND THE CITY'S ART COMMISSION. THE STAINLESS STEEL SCULPTURE WAS INITIALLY INSTALLED IN IROQUOIS PARK AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE PARKWAY IN JUNE 2014 AS A ONE-YEAR LOAN COURTESY OF THE ARTIST AND THE MARIANNE BOESKY GALLERY IN NEW YORK. CREATED AS PART OF PAINE'S "DENDROID" SERIES, "SYMBIOSIS" CONVEYS A FUSION OF INDUSTRIAL AND ORGANIC FORMS. IT WAS HAND-FABRICATED FROM THOUSANDS OF PIECES OF STAINLESS STEEL PIPE, PLATE AND RODS, SUGGESTING BOTH ECOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL BRANCHING SYSTEMS. A PUBLIC ON-SITE ARRIVAL CELEBRATION ATTENDED BY THE ARTIST FOLLOWED THE INSTALLATION OF THE SCULPTURE IN PHILADELPHIA. A PHOTO CONTEST FOR "SYMBIOSIS" THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA YIELDED A TROVE OF EXTRAORDINARY IMAGES AND TECH-SAVVY AUDIENCES, AND AN AUDIO PROGRAM FEATURING THE ARTIST WAS PRODUCED AS PART OF OUR MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS : AUDIO PROGRAM. THE SCULPTURE WAS ALSO RECOGNIZED IN 2014 AS THE "BEST NEW PUBLIC ARTWORK" IN "PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE". AMOR: IN 2015, ON THE OCCASION OF THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES AND THE PAPAL MASS ON THE PARKWAY, APA PARTNERED WITH THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART (PMA) TO BRING THE SCULPTURE AMOR BY ROBERT INDIANA TO PHILADELPHIA. INSTALLED ON THE MUSEUM'S EAST TERRACE FACING THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY, AMOR PROVIDED APA AND PMA WITH THE IDEAL OPPORTUNITY TO REACH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES. AMOR, MEANING "LOVE" IN BOTH POPE FRANCIS'S NATIVE SPANISH AND THE CHURCH'S TRADITIONAL LATIN, REMAINS ON LOAN THROUGH 2016 FROM THE MORGAN ART FOUNDATION, COURTESY OF SIMON AND MARC SALAMA-CARO. THE PRESENTATION OF AMOR BY APA AND PMA COMMUNICATED TO RESIDENTS AND VISITORS THAT PHILADELPHIA IS A WELCOMING INTERNATIONAL CITY. EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY TO MAKE AMOR A PERMANENT FIXTURE IN THE CITY'S PUBLIC ART COLLECTION AT A PARKWAY LOCATION. AS PART OF OUR STEWARDSHIP, WE ADDRESSED STORM DAMAGE, VANDALISM AND GRAFFITI THAT ARE ONGOING MAINTENANCE EMERGENCIES. WE CONTINUED TO CARRY OUT LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION AT THE "ELLEN PHILLIPS SAMUEL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE GARDEN". THE APA BROADCASTS PRESERVATION CONCERNS THROUGH THE MEDIA AND BUILDS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION THROUGH CONTRIBUTORS TO OUR CONSERVATION SOCIETY. ADDITIONALLY, IN 2015 WE WORKED WITH DAVID MCKNIGHT, DIRECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA'S RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY AT THE KISLAK CENTER FOR SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ON A PROPOSAL TO DIGITIZE THE APA'S HISTORIC MINUTE BOOKS FOR EVENTUAL PUBLIC ACCESS THROUGH THE APA'S WEBSITE.PUBLIC PROGRAMS: IN AUGUST 2015 WITH SUPPORT FROM APARTMENT INVESTMENT AND MANAGEMENT COMPANY (AIMCO) AND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PHILADELPHIA PARKS AND RECREATION, THE APA PRESENTED "SCULPTURE ZOO IN RITTENHOUSE SQUARE," A FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT OF ART RELATED ACTIVITIES THAT ENLIVENED THE SQUARE'S OUTDOOR SCULPTURES. VISITORS PARTICIPATED IN LIVE ANIMAL SCULPTURE-MAKING WORKSHOPS LED BY TEACHING ARTISTS AND OBSERVED ARTISTS CONDUCTING SCULPTURE DEMONSTRATIONS. THE SCULPTURE-MAKING PROCESS INSPIRED BY LIVE ANIMALS WAS USED BY MANY OF THE ARTISTS WHOSE WORKS ARE LOCATED IN RITTENHOUSE SQUARE. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE BICYCLE COALITION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA, IN 2015 THE APA CREATED A REVISED PUBLIC ART BIKE MAP WITH MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS : AUDIO SCULPTURE STOPS, AND PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS STAFF-LED BIKE TOURS IN FAIRMOUNT PARK. THE MAP WAS FEATURED IN "PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE'S" FEBRUARY 2015 "BE WELL PHILLY" BLOG. THE APA'S 143RD ANNUAL MEETING IN APRIL 2015 FEATURED A CONVERSATION BETWEEN ARTIST ROXY PAINE DISCUSSING HIS WORK AND HIS SCULPTURE "SYMBIOSIS" WITH TOM ECCLES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR CURATORIAL STUDIES AT BARD COLLEGE AND FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE PUBLIC ART FUND IN NEW YORK CITY. SOCIAL MEDIA: THE APA LEADS THE FIELD OF PUBLIC ART IN ITS USE OF SOCIAL AND MOBILE MEDIA AND CONTINUES TO HARNESS TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE OUR ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY. WE HAVE DEVELOPED A COMPREHENSIVE SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY AND HAVE ESTABLISHED A ROBUST PRESENCE ON FACEBOOK, FLICKR, FOURSQUARE, INSTAGRAM, YOUTUBE, VIMEO, AND TEACHER TUBE. WE ENCOURAGE CONTENT-BASED DISCUSSION AND ENGAGEMENT AROUND PUBLIC ART THROUGH PHOTO CONTESTS, "TWEET-UPS," CHECK-INS, VIDEOS, AND BY SHARING EXCLUSIVE CONTENT INCLUDING HISTORIC IMAGES FROM OUR ARCHIVES. IN 2015 WE WORKED WITH AWARD-WINNING DIGITAL DESIGN FIRM BLUECADET ON PROVIDING AND DEVELOPING CONTENT FOR A NEW, UPDATED, COMPREHENSIVE AND RESPONSIVE WEBSITE.
