Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The association for public art (apa, formerly the fairmount park art association) commissions, preserves, interprets and promotes public art in philadelphia. Dedicated to creating a museum without walls that informs, engages and inspires diverse audiences, the apa advances opportunities for artists to contribute to the city's places and spaces. Since its establishment in 1872 as the nation's first private non-profit public organization, the apa has been a model of public art creation, preservation and community engagement. The apa thrives on continuity and is distinguished by a commitment to permanent and temporary artworks. The curatorial approach of the apa supports the integration of public art and urban design through exemplary projects, programs, digital media and advocacy efforts that connect people with public art. The apa maintains a legacy for future generations, while promoting philadelphia as a premier city for public art.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Preserve public art: our outdoor sculpture conservation program is the longest continuously operating outdoor sculpture conservation program in the nation. During 2013 we treated over 30 bronze and marble sculptures of historic and artistic significance. The sculptures were cleaned and stabilized to protect them from further corrosion. As part of our stewardship, we addressed storm damage, vandalism and graffiti that are ongoing maintenance emergencies. We carried out landscape conservation at the "ellen phillips samuel memorial sculpture garden" and lighting preservation for a select group of sculptures in fairmount park. The conservation treatment and installation of the sculpture "rock form (porthcurno)" (1964) by dame barbara hepworth was accomplished and ceremoniously installed in three parkway plaza. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the battle of gettsyburg, replacement pieces were fabricated and installed on the bronze equestrian sculpture "general george gordon meade" by alexander milne calder, located behind memorial hall. A listing and map of civil war monuments and memorials in philadelphia was also developed for the apa website to commemorate the event.
Activity 3
Interpret and promote public art: public art is available to people in the course of their daily lives, and our "museum without walls" is open all day and all night. By this very definition our audience is large and diverse and includes all age groups - pedestrians, motorists, bicyclists and runners. Interpret: to interpret and promote public art, our museum without walls: audio program features participants from all walks of life, including artists, educators, curators, scientists, writers, historians, civic leaders and family members - "authentic voices" all with personal connections to the sculptures. The content-rich program is accessed through a variety of platforms: on the street by cell phone, audio download, smart phone app and qr code, or on a dedicated website as streaming audio and audio slideshows. During 2013, phase ii was developed and produced, significantly adding to the number of sculptures, voices, stops and interpretive signage. Museum without walls: audio now features 60 stops with 150 voices discussing the sculptures. A free launch event was held at the horticulture center in west fairmount park that included music performances, dance interpretations, and walking and bike tours to sites around the park.public programs: for valentine's day 2013 the apa sponsored a public art photo contest featuring robert indiana's "love" sculpture in philadelphia's famed love park. Through social media, the public was encouraged to send photographs of the "love" sculpture to instagram and twitter using the hashtag #lovepublicart. Awards were given to those that received the highest number of votes from the general public. The crowd-sourced images were combined together to create a large-scale mosaic photo for a poster that was displayed on center city bus shelters and distributed in smaller scale at city visitor centers. Plans are underway to undertake a new crowd-sourced project with the philadelphia museum of art for auguste rodin's iconic "thinker" sculpture located at the entryway to the rodin museum on the benjamin franklin parkway.to reach new audiences of college students, the apa partnered with temple contemporary of the tyler school of art to sponsor a free public lecture by internationally recognized public artist, teacher, curator and writer suzanne lacy at temple university.social media: the apa is leading the field in its use of social and mobile media to promote public art, and is harnessing technology to increase our organizational capacity. We have developed a comprehensive social media strategy and established a robust presence on facebook, flickr, foursquare, instagram, youtube, vimeo, and teacher tube. We encourage content-based discussion and engagement around public art through photo contests, "tweet-ups," check-ins, videos, and by sharing exclusive content including historic images from our archives.

IRS990/Description0THE ASSOCIATION IS DEDICATED TO CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS TO RESPOND TO THE ISSUES OF OUR TIME, WHILE REDEFINING PUBLIC SPACE AND ENCOURAGING PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND INTERACTION. "EL GRAN TEATRO DE LA LUNA": THE ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC ART (APA) WORKED WITH PHILADELPHIA PARKS AND RECREATION AND THE CITY'S OFFICE OF ARTS, CULTURE & THE CREATIVE ECONOMY TO PRESERVE AND REINSTALL INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ARTIST RAFAEL FERRER'S "EL GRAN TEATRO DE LA LUNA." THE FAIRMOUNT PARK ART ASSOCIATION (NOW ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC ART) ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED THIS SCULPTURE, INSTALLED IT IN NORTH PHILADELPHIA'S FAIRHILL SQUARE COMMUNITY, AND DONATED IT TO THE CITY. THE CITY UTILITY BUILDING, WHICH SERVED AS ITS BASE, WAS DEMOLISHED SOME YEARS AGO, AND THE SCULPTURE WAS PUT INTO STORAGE. WHEN THE CITY REHABILITATED THE PARK, THE COMMUNITY REQUESTED THE RETURN OF THE SCULPTURE. FERRER COMPLETELY REPAINTED AND RESTORED THE SCULPTURE AS PART OF A NEW PERFORMANCE SPACE. A REDEDICATION CEREMONY WAS HELD IN MAY 2013, AND FERRER WAS INVITED TO SPEAK TO OUR MEMBERSHIP AND INVITED GUESTS AT THE 141ST APA ANNUAL MEETING."OPEN AIR" AND "LINES IN FOUR DIRECTIONS IN FLOWERS": TWO APA PROJECTS, "OPEN AIR" BY RAFAEL LOZANO-HEMMER AND "LINES IN FOUR DIRECTIONS IN FLOWERS" BY THE LATE SOL LEWITT (CARRIED OUT POSTHUMOUSLY WITH THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART), WERE BOTH NAMED AMONG THE 50 BEST PUBLIC ART PROJECTS BY THE 2013 PUBLIC ART NETWORK YEAR IN REVIEW BY AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS. CHOSEN FROM MORE THAN 250 SUBMISSIONS FROM ACROSS THE U.S., THE AWARDS WERE GIVEN TO "THE MOST EXEMPLARY, INNOVATIVE, PERMANENT OR TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART WORKS CREATED OR DEBUTED IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR." "OPEN AIR" ALSO RECEIVED A 2013 PHILADELPHIA GEEK AWARD FOR "EVENT OF THE YEAR." "SYMBIOSIS" (WORK IN PROGRESS): DURING 2013 THE APA SELECTED INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST ROXY PAINE'S STAINLESS STEEL SCULPTURE "SYMBIOSIS" FOR PLACEMENT IN IROQUOIS PARK AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY. FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF A STUDY "MORE PARK, LESS WAY," THE APA BEGAN PLANNING EFFORTS WITH PHILADELPHIA PARKS & RECREATION TO FOLLOW RECOMMENDATIONS TO ANIMATE THE PARKWAY AT EAKINS OVAL AND IROQUOIS PARK. "SYMBIOSIS" IS PART OF PAINE'S "DENDROID" SERIES THAT CONVEY A FUSION OF INDUSTRIAL AND ORGANIC FORMS. HAND-FABRICATED FROM THOUSANDS OF PIECES OF STAINLESS STEEL PIPE, PLATE AND RODS, IT SUGGESTS BOTH ECOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL BRANCHING SYSTEMS. THE ARTIST VISITED PHILADELPHIA, SELECTED A SITE, AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE OLIN STUDIO AND THE APA, SELECTED A LOCATION FOR THE SCULPTURE ON THE LAND PARCEL AND CREATED A SITE PLAN. PRESENTATIONS WERE MADE TO PHILADELPHIA PARKS & RECREATION AND THE PHILADELPHIA ART COMMISSION, WHERE IT WAS APPROVED FOR INSTALLATION IN IROQUOIS PARK. NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDED WITH THE ARTIST AND THE MARIANNE BOESKY GALLERY IN NEW YORK FOR THE LOAN OF "SYMBIOSIS" TO THE APA. INSTALLATION OF "SYMBIOSIS" IN IROQUOIS PARK IS PLANNED FOR JUNE 2014."MAGIC CARPET" (WORK IN PROGRESS): DURING 2013 THE APA COMMISSIONED PHILADELPHIA-BASED MULTI-MEDIA ARTIST CANDY COATED (FORMERLY CANDY DEPEW) TO BEGIN PLANS FOR A NEW ARTWORK FOR THE SECOND SEASON OF THE OVAL AT EAKINS OVAL ON THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PARKWAY. WORKING WITH PHILADELPHIA PARKS & RECREATION, THE FAIRMOUNT PARK CONSERVANCY, AND A VARIETY OF VENDORS AND CONTRACTORS (INCLUDING PAINT AND VINYL DECAL SPECIALISTS), THE ARTIST DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED "MAGIC CARPET" AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ARTWORK AND CREATIVE THEME FOR THE OVAL 2014. DEPEW WILL BRING TOGETHER INSTALLATION ART AND EXUBERANT DESIGNS, AS WELL AS OTHER WHIMSICAL AND UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS INCLUDING 3-D ILLUSION ART AND BRILLIANTLY COLORED SANDBOXES. THE SITE WILL BE ARRANGED INTO FIVE AREAS, EACH WITH A DIFFERENT ATTRACTION, EXPERIENCE AND FUNCTION, UNIFIED BY THE OVERALL "MAGIC CARPET" THEME, WHICH WILL INCORPORATE DAILY PROGRAMMING AND OTHER AMENITIES ORGANIZED BY THE OVAL CO-SPONSORS. THE ARTIST WILL HOLD TWO FAMILY ART WORKSHOPS WHEN THE OUTDO
