Production: The new, critically acclaimed professional theater company maintains and occupies the historic theater, which now includes a Playwright-in-Residence program, an artist club, a black box studio and a main stage where a diversity of theater is experienced year round. Plays and Players produces a professional season of theatre devoted to supporting established and emerging local artists. Committed to new works, Plays & Players has presented series such as Superheroes Who Are Super!, word-for-word staged readings of classic DC and Marvel Comic Books and performances of Hear Again Radio Project, vintage old time radio shows for the whole family, featuring live music & Foley sound effects at each performance. Plays & Players has also made it a tradition to produce a World Premiere each season.

Activity 3

Community outreach: Plays and Players serves a niche greatly needed in the Philadelphia theatrical community. While many theaters of like size to Plays & Players focus on the type of artistic presentation they provide (only performing comedies, or political theater, or musical theater, etc.), P & P offers a multi-faceted output of work that is quite simply dedicated to showcasing the local artist. There is an entry point for all artists, production support staff, and audience into the community that Plays & Players provides. The typical P&P artist is atypical. Directors most seasons are male and female, as young as under 30 and as old as over 60, and included people making their debut at P & P and people who had directed on the same stage for over 30 years. Likewise the typical P & P audience members is atypical. An attendee to Superheroes Who Are Super! is frequently seeing a theatrical production for the first time, or seeing theater that appealed to their sensibilities in a way they never imagined is possible. In contrast an attendee to a World Premiere performance is typically a more frequent theater goer and is seeking a new and exciting experience. Plays & Players also produces student matinees and educational outreach sending teaching artists to schools to work with students in the classroom before they come and see a production.
