DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Barat Foundation arts education programs create safe spaces to engage youth, encourage and develop creative expression, improve academic performance, improve self-esteem, and promote a positive and emotionally healthy life-style. Students develop invaluable tools for everyday living including imagination, observation, and critical problem solving skills while working to improve the quality of life in the city. Animodules : In 2015 new Animodules were created at Central High School, the Alma Flagg School, the Marion Bolden After School Center, Science Park High School, St. Benedict's Prep, and the AIDS Firehouse. The Annual Creation Nation Art & Peace Parade: Using art as a catalyst for positive change and civic engagement, the Barat Foundation Creation Nation Parade celebrated its 8th year in 2015, honored to be the official kick-off to Newark Celebration 350 - a city-wide celebration of Newark's 350th Anniversary. The parade is a city-wide collaboration involving Newark Public, Independent and Charter Schools, NJPAC, the Office of the Mayor, the Mayor's Centers of Hope, Rutgers Newark, The Thomas Edison Foundation, Essex County College, NJIT, the Newark Tourist and Visitors Bureau and dozens of community organizations and churches. The Creation Nation Parade is the culmination and celebration of the year's art making in Newark schools and community organizations. The 2015 parade represented the work of thousands of Newark children, and dozens of Newark artists. Creator's Clubs:At the debut of the NPS 2015-16 academic year, the Barat Foundation brought its Creator's Clubs to Science Park High School on 8 consecutive Saturday mornings, where children, parents, and community volunteers from all over Newark, along with 50 visiting foreign students from the Netherlands, had the opportunity to create Animodules, banners, and additional artworks for the upcoming Creation Nation Parade. These free and open to the public art making workshops involved over 500 students and volunteers.Messages Through Murals: The Barat Foundation continued its Messages through Murals campaign in 2015 creating several murals in schools as the focus of arts education programming, in support of NJ Core Curriculum Standards for the Arts. In addition, the Barat Foundation was commissioned to create a community mural for the new ShopRite of Newark, the first supermarket to come to the city, a food desert, in 50 years. The Community Mural at the new ShopRite:The Barat Foundation was commissioned by the owners of the new ShopRite in Newark to create a community mural to represent what a supermarket brings to its community. We brought the project into 11 schools and community organizations, involving over 300 students. The project was filled with joy, pride, and a commitment from the schools, the owners of the new supermarket, the ShopRite nutritionist, and of course, our Newark students. The ShopRite mural program included three phases of workshops:" Idea Generation Workshops - Barat Foundation artists in residence presented the mural concept to students and asked for sketches, words, and ideas to include in the mural. " Nutrition Workshops - The ShopRite nutritionist came to the schools and introduced students to healthy kale salads with kale, fresh avocado, strawberries, raspberries, sunflower seeds and balsamic vinegar. Many of the students had never seen these foods before." Mural Painting - Once all of the students submitted their sketches and ideas, a Barat Foundation muralist put them into a cohesive form and outlined the mural on vinyl to be ready for painting. 40 vinyl panels were brought into the schools for painting. Over 300 children were directly involved in painting the mural. The finished mural, which is 5 feet high by 60 feet long, has been placed prominently over the cash registers near the store exit. All students involved with the project were invited to the store's grand opening. The mural is now featured on city busses and billboards, and has become an integral part of ShopRite's public relations and advertising campaigns.$0$46,409
Summer Program Abroad:The Barat Foundation Summer Program brought 10 students from all over the world, including four scholarship students from Newark, to Iceland for a month long culture and art immersion program. This is a life-changing program, particularly for our Newark scholarship students who have never before traveled. Each of our students study the culture, and create both group and individual art projects under the tutelage of our artists and teachers. Students also engage in community service, working with our local village grammar school, and teaching English to the children of the town.$0$41,166
Barat Foundation public arts and arts education programs include: 1. In school and after-school artist in residence programs at Newark schools and community organizations, which relate to and are in direct support of support of age and grade appropriate NJ core curriculum content standards for the arts.2. Large-scale community created public artworks and art installations -Animodules , currently on view at Newark Liberty International Airport, Turtle Back Zoo, Rutgers University, and NPS. Now seen by over 500,000 travelers to our region per year, these public art installations created by the children of the city create ownership, encourage community engagement and civic responsibility.3. The Creation Nation Art and Peace Parade and Creator's Clubs: the largest collaborative art event in Newark, having celebrated its eighth year as the kick-off to Celebration 350 - a citywide celebration of Newark's 350th Anniversary. The parade brings together thousands of Newark youth, the Newark Public Schools, the Newark Arts Council, NJPAC, the Municipal Council and numerous community, civic, and business organizations, to celebrate creativity and the power of art to transform lives and communities. The parade is preceded by 2 months of free and open art making workshops "Creator's Clubs".4. Youth Entrepreneurship Through the Arts: Entrepreneurship education affording Newark youth experiential learning opportunities to identify and develop artistic creative ideas to produce viable business opportunities. 5. Summer Study Abroad: Summer language, culture and art immersion programs abroad, including the Willie Cole Scholarship Fund for Newark youth. To date the Barat Foundation has taken over 60 Newark youth abroad on scholarship to this program, awarding over $400,000 in scholarships, including 7 scholarship students this past summer. 100% of our past summer scholarship recipients have gone on to college. The Barat Foundation continued their "Public art by the Public" programs, developing and producing public art pieces created by schools and communities working directly with professional artists. The Barat Foundation has created a Newark original art-form called the Animodule -- a combination of the words "animate and "modular; sculptures created by joining two flat planes together to create a 3 dimensional sculpture. The Animodule curriculum is an inter-disciplinary arts program including research, visual arts, language arts, and mathematics as students work together to create something larger than themselves, building an enduring art piece that represents their community, and becomes part of an even greater whole when it joins its fellow Animodules in the annual Creation Nation Art Parade. This program employs numerous New Jersey artists who have the opportunity to share their vision, passion and expertise with Newark's youth, while producing an impressive body of work. The Animodule Curriculum is in relation to and in support of age and grade appropriate NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards for the Arts. To date over 60 Animodules have been created in Newark schools and community organizations. At the invitation of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey, the Barat Foundation has put in place an installation of student-created Animodule sculptures at the Arrivals area at Terminal B of Newark Liberty International Airport. The exhibition, accompanied by signage and two videos running on a loop explaining the Animodule process, was first installed in January 2014 to greet dignitaries visiting New York/New Jersey for the Superbowl. The exhibition has been so successful that the Port Authority has requested that it now remain at the airport indefinitely. Animodules proclaimed the "Official Peace Ambassadors of Newark". The Barat Foundation Animodules were proclaimed in June 2013 as "the Official Peace Ambassadors of Newark", by the Honorable Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark. In an official City Proclamation, the mayor proclaimed: WHEREAS the Barat Foundation Animodules, giant modular sculptures, are an original Newark art form first created in 2008 by the Barat Foundation and Newark school teacher, Terry Brewin, working with Newark youth,WHEREAS Animodules represent the Barat Foundation's mission of "transforming young lives through the arts and innovation", WHEREAS Animodules represent a powerful vision of community unity and peace, WHEREAS Animodules have proudly led the Creation Nation Art and Peace Parade, since 2008, the largest collaborative art event in the City, thereby creating a new tradition of "Public Art by the Public" in Newark,WHEREAS over 50 Animodules have been created by the Barat Foundation in Newark by artists in residence working with Newark youth, for locations including East Side High School, West Side High School, Central High School, University High School, Newark Early College High School, Bard College Early High School, Teachers Preparatory Charter School, Bridges High School, Big Picture Schools, Belmont Runyon School, the Park Street School, the Newark Boys Chorus School, the YEES Center, Rutgers Future Scholars, North 13th Street Vocational High School, Newark Vocational High School, Newark Technology High School, Fast Track Academy, the Greater Newark Conservancy, Communities in Schools, the Newark Museum, Dinosaur BBQ, and the Newark Housing Authority, WHEREAS the Animodules represent the best of the spirit of the City and the creative potential of her youth in public events at the Creation Nation Art and Peace Parade, The Newark Museum, Essex County Bloomfest, Hoopfest, the Harlem Book Fair, the IZOD Meadowlands Sports Arena, the Governor's Island Peace Parade, Turtle Back Zoo, the Lincoln Park Music Festival, and the New Jersey Global Yoga Mala,WHEREAS the Animodules are set to become a national model, making history in educational reform and creating a new vision for public art, I hereby do declare Animodules as the official Peace Ambassadors of the City of Newark, representing a powerful vision of community unity and peace, improving the lives of all the residents of this great metropolis, Signed by:The Honorable Cory Booker, Mayor of the City of Newark, NJ$0$40,000

In an official City Proclamation, the mayor proclaimed: WHEREAS the B

The mural is now featured on city busses and billboards, and has

This is a life-changing program, particularly for our Newark scholarship students who have never before traveled. Each of our students study the culture, and create both group and individual art projects under the tutelage of our artists and teachers. Students also engage in community service, working with our local village grammar school, and teaching English to the children of the town.
