“Clinical Training and Workforce Development (CTWD): This comprehensive workforce development project provides the 270 hours of education needed for individuals interested in becoming licensed or certified alcohol and drug counselors and advance renewal courses required to maintain licensure and certification. The full curriculum of initial licensing and certification courses is provided through synchronous and interactive virtual sessions, which occur four days a week. Advance training courses are offered as needed depending on field trends and demands. All initial and advanced renewal courses are free of charge to qualified participants working in a Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) licensed facility. Scholarships for classes for those interested in becoming a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) and virtual training for Chemical Dependency Associate (CDA) and Certified Clinical Supervisors (CCS) are also offered through the CTWD project. Peer Recovery Support Services Workforce Development Overview: This workforce development project provides the required peer recovery support trainings to all NJ Peer Workers working within DMHAS peer recovery support service initiatives. These initiatives take place in various community settings such as hospitals, prison systems, law enforcement, recovery centers, formal treatment settings, prevention agencies, child protection and child welfare agencies, educational settings, and community and behavioral health centers. NJPN is an approved education provider for the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor (NAADAC), the Association for Addiction Professionals and the Addiction Professionals Certification Board. Therefore, the peer recovery support trainings which NJPN provide are approved for initial coursework and renewal credits that can be applied towards peer credentials such as the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) and the National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS). Mindfulness (Professional Development SOR): The Peer Workforce Development Program Initiative plays a crucial role in supporting mindfulness within the helping profession. One of its primary objectives is to expand and enhance professional development training opportunities for individuals in various roles, including peer workers, social workers, addiction counselors, and more. NJPN achieves this through scholarships for diverse training formats, ensuring criteria alignment with DMHAS goals. Furthermore, the initiative focuses on enhancing professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to self-care, emotional wellness, and mindfulness-based recovery. It offers holistic stress management techniques, including mindfulness-based recovery, meditation, deep breathing, and muscle relaxation training, through onsite or virtual programs. Participants can continue their learning journey with supportive sessions and skill-based trainings. Peer Certificate: The Peer Certificate Program, spanning from July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2025, is dedicated to enhancing peer recovery support services through specialized certifications. The program's first objective is to extend the existing peer certifications (CPRS & NCPRSS) by creating specialized certifications tailored to specific peer recovery support settings, such as hospitals, communities, maternal care, family engagement, faith-based initiatives, and more. NJPN collaborates with experts to develop relevant content, ensuring it aligns with the latest research and evidence-based practices. Trainings leading to these "Specialty Certifications" will encompass critical topics in the peer recovery support services field. NJPN engages state and national experts to identify pertinent areas and hosts discussions with key stakeholders to shape training topics and formats. The program carefully designs curricula and materials, prepares trainers, and offers multiple certifications over four years. Moreover, NJPN may se”
“Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ: NJPN coordinates the Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ (TFHNJ), a statewide project focusing on increasing our residents' access to smoke-free air where they work, live, and play. NJPN receives funding from the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Tobacco Control, Nutrition and Fitness to provide regional outreach efforts in partnership with Atlantic Prevention Resources and the Center for Prevention and Counseling. The TFHNJ Program works to reduce tobacco use and the negative impact of secondhand smoke in all counties of New Jersey. This project has multiple components. TFHNJ promotes opportunities for smoke-free living by providing training and technical assistance to housing authorities, property managers, and landlords who want to transition their multi-unit housing complexes to smoke-free housing. TFHNJ recognizes that colleges and universities play a critical role in addressing this growing public health issue. TFHNJ has committed to support all New Jersey campuses to work towards 100% tobacco-free policies by pulling together resources and best practices from around the country to make them available to New Jersey campuses. The program also provides business owners with help improving or creating new Worksite Wellness initiatives to support cessation and reduce tobacco use among our workforce. In addition, NJPN staff provides technical assistance to municipalities to create smoke-free outdoor ordinances as well as to reduce youth access to cigarettes, e-cigarettes and hookah by implementing point-of-sale strategies in establishments that sell these products. Lastly, Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ is working with NJ youth through the Youth Tobacco Action Groups a prevention and cessation program for youth ages 13-18. Each county in New Jersey has a county youth tobacco action group. These groups are working to decrease youth tobacco use and initiation. NJ Drug Free Communities (Impact NJ): In September 2020, the IMPACT NJ Coalition received a Drug-free Communities grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). It is currently the only statewide grant of this kind in the country. The IMPACT NJ Coalition focuses on reducing marijuana and tobacco use among youth ages 18 and under throughout the State of New Jersey. Building from current and previous coalitions coordinated by NJPN, IMPACT NJ brings together state and local leaders who are dedicated to sharing their expertise and time and work collaboratively to achieve common goals. The mission of the IMPACT NJ Coalition is to reduce substance use and abuse among youth through strong collaboration with key stakeholders, building capacity among members based on best practices, implementing evidence-based environmental strategies, and advocating for positive changes. NJ Highway Traffic Safety: A special educational track was created for NJPN's Annual Addiction Conference that was funded through the Division of Highway Traffic Safety Department. This track targeted preventionists and offered a power session and two workshops that made the connection between drug and alcohol use by youth and the high risk of drinking and drugged driving. Annual Addiction Conference: NJPN's Annual Addiction Conference was held in person for the first time in four years. It was held on May 16th and 17th, 2024 with 1,200 professionals from service providers across the continuum of care who learned from experts in the field of addiction. The conference was held at the Atlantic City Convention Center and included keynote and plenary sessions as well as 16 workshop options to educate the state's front-line professionals about critical issues surrounding substance misuse, addiction and other key topics. Over 80 exhibitors provided a unique forum for networking, collaboration, and workforce development. This conference provides a unique opportunity for the addiction community to come together to learn more about their specific area of focus, as well as ot”
“Prevention Fellowship: NJPN was awarded funding to develop the first ever Prevention Fellowship program in NJ. The goal of the program is to expand New Jersey's prevention workforce to ensure that evidencebased quality services are being provided to the diverse communities across the state. During the multi-year project ending in March 2025, NJPN will recruit and select a cohort of young professionals with diverse backgrounds and experience to become part of the Prevention Fellowship Program. Fellows will complete the required 120 hours of coursework toward their CPS certification and then will be placed in partner agencies to gain experience working in the field. NJPN is also strengthening the CPS course work being provided for all prevention professionals in NJ. We are encouraging agencies to encourage current staff to become a CPS. Opioid Report: NJPN was awarded a grant from the NJ DMHAS to develop a state report highlighting programs and interventions that they have funded to address the opioid crisis in New Jersey. They created the first-ever report covering the 2019 and 2020 calendar year, a 75-page multi-color designed report document distributed in 2023-24. NJPN was funded again to develop the 2021-22 report which is being finalized and will be distributed during 2024. RTI SFP ACEs Research Project: NJPN is a sub-grantee of a CDC grant awarded to RTI to conduct a research study entitled Evaluating an ACEs-Targeting Advocate Model of a Substance Use Prevention Program. The goal of the study is to determine if adding a trauma-informed Family Advocate into the evidencebased Strengthening Families Program (SFP) would mitigate the harms of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), prevent future ACEs among the children in the families participating and ultimately prevent substance use and overdose. NJPN will be contracting with 6 7 prevention agencies per year for the implementation of the 11 week SFP under the study protocol. Risk Messaging: Partnership with the Public Good Projects (PGP), NJPN is creating a comprehensive multi-media youth campaign (Just the Facts NJ) addressing the risk of substance use and misuse among teens. A youth website is being created to provide additional information to youth related to the facts about the negative effects of drug use. In addition, a branded parent campaign (Guide, Connect, Empower) will complement the goals of the youth campaign and provide a website full of public health information and resources for parents. NJSIAA Youth Athlete Project: NJPN is partnering with NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) to create and promote youth messaging throughout the statewide athletic events hosted by NJSIAA. NJPN created public health messages for youth and in particular, youth athletes and their parents. Messages will direct people to the Prevention Hub website to access additional information and resources and to the Connect, Guide Empower site for information for parents.”
