The document is then provided electronically to the full board of trustees for review, comment, and edits as necessary prior to filing.”

“COMMUNITY CONSERVATION The organization once again ran its summer program for underserved children aimed at getting them outside and learning about gardening, farming, healthy eating, and teamwork. The program reached eight children and their families. This program was offered free of charge for attendees thanks to the generous support of donors.”
“LAND MANAGEMENT AND RECREATION The organization monitored 19 properties owned in fee simple for a total of 1,703 acres. Staff and volunteers continued scientific studies of restoration of the American chestnut and control of American beech, which included maintaining deer exclusion fencing in five areas previously planted with 150 hybrid American chestnut seedlings. Staff worked with a professor and students from Keene State College to study carbon storage on land owned by the Conservancy. Staff maintained or enhanced 20 miles of public hiking trails and continued to co-lead the Wantastiquet to Monadnock Trail Coalition in governing management issues through the entire 48-mile trail route. A new public trailhead parking area was constructed on the Mountain Brook Reservoir property in Jaffrey to enable safe hiker access, and the trail was rerouted to connect with the parking area and reduce hiker impacts on wetland habitats. On the Devan Preserve in Marlborough, a remotely triggered wildlife camera was installed to monitor wildlife, a winter mammal tracking workshop was held, and a local ecologist was hired to perform breeding bird surveys. Staff began to learn about historic resources on land the Conservancy owns and methods for their protection and preservation. Staff also planned two new parking and trail projects for fiscal year 2020.”
“Conservation easements are recorded at cost if purchased. Once the easement has been acquired the value of the asset is written down to a value of 1 on the statement of financial position with a corresponding entry to program service costs. Donated easements are not recorded as an asset, revenue or expense but a record of the transaction is maintained and the details of the transaction are reported in a footnote to the financial statements.”

These easements provide the following public benefits protection of significant wildlife habitat as identified by our state wildlife action plan expansion of existing undeveloped blocks of conservation land conservation of highly productive soils that are suitable for both farming and forestry protection of water resources, including streams, wetlands, floodplain, and aquifers protection of scenic views and rural character, including land along the federally-designated Connecticut River scenic byway and protection of public access for nonmotorized recreational uses on four of the easements. Staff presented educational workshops on land conservation and related topics at regional, statewide, and national conferences.
