Bayshore discovery projects maintains a significant collection of photographs, artifacts and ephemera documenting and preserving the history of the delaware bay. The folklife center presents programs and conducts research including an oral history project that is capturing bayshore stories and sharing them with the broader community. The 1904 bivalve shipping sheds, on the national register of historic places, serve as the centerpiece of the museum and interpret the incredible importance of oysters to the south jersey regional economy and development. The restoration of the shipping sheds is underway and nearing completion. The vision for the future of bayshore discovery project is quickly becoming a reality as the shipping shed restoration progresses. Boatbuilding, exhibits, maritime crafts and trades, raw bars, touch tanks and aquaria are becoming part of the visitor experience as they experience this "portal for discovery" for delaware bay.

Activity 3

Bayshore discovery project accomplishes its mission through its programs at the bivalve center and through outreach programs which are not tied to a particular facility. The largest outreach event is delaware bay days - a free maritime folklife festival put on for two days at two locations each year the 2nd weekend of june. The community served by bdp is one of the most distressed regions in all of new jersey. The goal of bay days is to provide a much needed opportunity for the region to celebrate its history, culture and environment - motivating the festival-goers to enhance their understanding of the importance of the bay to the past, the present and, most importantly, to the future of the region. Attendance at bay days has ranged from 7-15,000, over 400 volunteers from bdp and partner organizations work throughout the year to make the event a success. Other outreach efforts of bdp include programs taken into the local schools, kids about the bay, and a new initiative called "discover delaware bay" which includes a new website and "bayshore chamber"-like initiatives to support bdp's partners throughout the bayshore. Bdp's outreach efforts also include a significant volunteer program, engaging over 400 people in all aspects of bdp's programming and introducing them to the bay, the meerwald and to bivalve. Bdp's green practices and its goal to teach by example are important outreach program elements as well.
