NEC student-athletes averaged a league-record 3.28 GPA last year and 80 percent of league teams finished with a 3.0 GPA or better. The NEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its annual meeting at the Conference office in Somerset, NJ where the group volunteered for a day at Bonnie Brae, a nationally recognized school and treatment center which serves as a safe haven for at risk boys located in Basking Ridge, NJ. For the first time, Saint Francis U was the recipient of the NEC Building Communities award. The award recognizes the institution that demonstrates the highest dedication to making an impact in the community through the efforts of its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. SFU logged 5,817 hours and conference members recorded 31,400 hours of community service over the course of the 2017-18 academic year. The NEC honored 22 teams - one for each sport the NEC sponsors - for their commitment to sportsmanship last season as part of its annual team sportsmanship awards program. This initiative recognizes those teams who best adhere to the principles of sportsmanship and are recognized for pursuing victory with honor in their respective sports. The NEC welcomed more than 75 individuals, ranging from athletic administrators and athletic trainers to student-athletes and other campus personnel, to Long Branch, NJ for the second annual NEC Mental Health and Medical Issues Summit last June. The comprehensive, interactive program included a panel of decorated speakers who addressed topics including: Depression, Anxiety and Coping with Injury; Diversity and Multicultural Issues Impacting Mental Health & Wellness; and the Importance of Sleep.
