Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Ky melhado, director and stoddard melhado, president and director are married.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The board of directors received a copy of the form 990 prior to its filing. The form 990 was then authorized and signed by the organization's board president.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The board of directors requires an annual declaration from all board members and senior management as to the existence and disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest. The board members sign a disclosure statement. Any potential conflicts are discussed by the dis-interested board members, while the party in potential conflict is required to leave the room. Board meeting minutes will document the discussion and decision making process. In the event of a potential conflict, procedures to obtain competitive bids and diligence on fair market value will be established.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The greyhound friend's board of directors has adopted a policy for establishing and maintaining a competitive compensation program for the key executives of the organization. Under the policy, the board is required to meet as needed to review the compensation program and make recommendations for any changes, as appropriate. A performance evaluation, conducted and reviewed each year, is intended to ensure that the compensation program falls within a reasonable range of competitive practices for comparable positions among similarly situated organizations. Following this review, the board will review and approve, for selected key executives, base salaries and annual incentive opportunity adjustments, and objectives and goals for the upcoming year's annual incentive plan. The board will recommend to the board salary approval and incentive awards for the executive director and selected key senior staff.

IRS990/Desc0GREYHOUND FRIENDS INC., LOCATED IN HOPKINTON, MASSACHUSETTS, IS A SMALL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO RE-HOMING RETIRED RACETRACK GREYHOUNDS AND PLACING THEM IN RESPONSIBLE LOVING HOMES. GREYHOUNDS PASSING THROUGH THE KENNEL HAVE GENTLE DISPOSITIONS AND MAKE WONDERFUL COMPANIONS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1983, GREYHOUND FRIENDS HAS FOUND HOMES FOR MORE THAN 10,000 DOGS. THE ORGANIZATION MAINTAINS A KENNEL TO RECEIVE GREYHOUNDS AND AS SOON AS A DOG IS ADOPTED ANOTHER ONE COMES IN FROM A RACING KENNEL. DOGS, WHO COME TO THE KENNEL ARE WELL CARED FOR. MOST RESPOND IMMEDIATELY TO KIND TREATMENT AND ARE READIED FOR ADOPTION. GREYHOUND FRIENDS RELIES ON VOLUNTEERS WHO HELP WITH ALL ASPECTS OF THE WORK.GREYHOUND FRIENDS ALSO WORKS ON A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL TO EDUCATE AND RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE CHALLENGES FACING THIS PARTICULAR BREED OF DOG, TO FURTHER INTERNATIONAL RESCUE AND ADOPTION EFFORTS, AND TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICY. THE REACH OF THE ORGANIZATION'S EDUCATIONAL AND ADVOCACY WORK IS A DIRECT RESULT OF A DEEP ORGANIZATIONAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE BREED AND RACING INDUSTRY, AS WELL AS ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY WORKING TO END GREYHOUND ABUSE. GREYHOUND FRIENDS' ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL UPDATE PROGRAM REFLECTS THIS. HELD EACH YEAR IN HOPKINTON, PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS FROM SPAIN, ARGENTINA, IRELAND, ITALY AND OTHER PLACES AROUND THE WORLD SHARED PERSPECTIVES ABOUT GREYHOUND AND HOUND ISSUES AND A VARIETY OF ADVOCACY INITIATIVES. OTHER INITIATIVES HAVE INCLUDED DOCUMENTARY FILM MAKING AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS. A SAD REALITY IS THAT GREYHOUNDS PAST THEIR RACING PRIME IN THE UNITED STATES ARE OFTEN DISCARDED BY THE RACING INDUSTRY AND DUMPED ABROAD WHERE THEY ARE HELD IN DEPLORABLE LIVING CONDITIONS AND FORCED INTO ILLEGAL STRAIGHT RACING. HISTORIC RACING CULTURES IN OTHER COUNTRIES ALSO UNDERMINE GREYHOUND STANDARDS OF CARE. TWO RECENT DOCUMENTARY FILMS, PRODUCED ON BEHALF OF GREYHOUND FRIENDS BY PHOTO-JOURNALIST JOHN MOTTERN, EXPOSE THESE DARK REALITIES: LAND OF THE MAGPIE & THE CROW (HIGHLIGHTING THE CHANGING ATTITUDES AND MARKETPLACES BOTH DOMESTICALLY IN IRELAND AND INTERNATIONALLY FOR GREYHOUNDS) AND A CRIME TO BE BORN IN ARGENTINA (EXPOSING GREYHOUND ABUSE IN ARGENTINEAN STRAIGHT RACING). THE FILMS AND ARE IMPORTANT TOOLS TO BOTH EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND INFLUENCE REGULATION OF THE RACING INDUSTRY. THE RECENT ARGENTINEAN LEGISLATIVE BAN ON GREYHOUND RACING IS A TANGIBLE REMINDER OF THE IMPACT THESE KINDS OF ADVOCACY EFFORTS CAN HAVE. A CRIME TO BE BORN IN ARGENTINA WAS WIDELY DISTRIBUTED BY ANIMAL ADVOCATES AND VIEWED ACROSS ARGENTINA IN THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO THE LEGISLATIVE VOTE.
