Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The catamount trail association is a passionate group of backcountry skiers and outdoor enthusiasts. We've been breaking trail since 1984, creating north america's longest backcountry ski trail and pioneering innovative recreation projects throughout vermont. Our mission is to expand access to vermont's backcountry because we believe days spent in the mountains with friends are powerful, and that those experiences should be open to everyone. We are advocates, volunteers, supporters, and trailblazers working to steward the catamount trail, manage backcountry ski terrain, permanently protect mountain lands, and expand equitable access to skiing. By building trails, community, and opportunity we connect people to vermont's mountain landscape.

Development and maintenance of 300 mile cross country ski trail in vermont.

Other programs include: ski cubs: ski cubs is an educational program of the catamount trail association focused on introducing youth to cross-country skiing as a means to promote healthy lifestyles for vermont families and communities. Ski cubs collaborates with local organizations and schools to serve participants with limited resources and limited access to winter sports opportunities. This program empowers vermont youth to enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle during the winter. Tours: cta offers multi-day tours (mdts) and single-day tours (sdts). Mdts provide an opportunity for members to ski many sections of the ct in one winter. Cta offers two weeklong tours (wlts) and two four-day tours (4dts) as well as occasional special tours. Sdts are open to non-members. Events: race to the top of vermont, which is held each year in august, is cta's primary fundraising event. Educational events (including the ladies nordic ski expo and the get out and backcountry ski instructional series) are held primarily in the winter months. Vermont backcountry alliance: the vermont backcountry alliance (vtbc) seeks to protect, advance and advocate for human-powered backcountry skiing and snowboarding in vermont. The vtbc facilitates public access to backcountry terrain while promoting the conservation and responsible management of our mountain environment. Vtbc is a program of the catamount trail association (cta) guided by the vtbc working group, a diverse community of backcountry skiers and riders. Vtbc works collaboratively with its partners to facilitate backcountry programs and projects in vermont. Local chapters: rochester area sports alliance (rasta) winter program was recognized as a local chapter of cta and vtbc. Rasta winter supports backcountry skiing in vermont through the braintree mountain forest backcountry glades & trails project, the usfs brandon gap backcountry glades project and the marsh brook ski and snowshoe loop.
