“Founded in 1982, opera north celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022. Since its founding, opera north has dedicated its efforts to delivering artistic excellence to the region as the only full-time, professional opera company in new hampshire. Over time, the company has evolved from a grassroots community theater troupe to a professional, regional opera company presenting three to four mainstage productions between july and october, a resident artist program, and a series of concerts, special events and educational outreach activities, each year. Through our unique partnership with the national park service that begun in 2017, we are creating a national park for the arts at blow-me-down farm in cornish, nh. Opera north's 2022 season began with a special encore production in december 2022 at the lebanon opera house of all is calm by peter rothstein. We celebrated our 40th anniversary with a special pre-season gala that featured special guests, video testimonials, and the launch of a special fund to honor artistic director louis burkot. The new fund, aptly named the louis burkot fund for artistic excellence, will support opera north's ability to continue to bring exceptional artists to perform with the company each season. Our summer season at blow-me-down farm included three mainstage productions: carnevale (our signature opera/circus event); mozart's cosi fan tutte, and verdi's la traviata. Finally, we presented bette, babs, and beyond, a concert in celebration of great american divas. In total, over 4,000 patrons attended opera north events this past year.”

“Opera north's highly sought after resident artist program is an important training opportunity for emerging opera professionals. Additionally, opera north is active throughout the year with educational programming and special events. The organization's education and outreach program has provided free performances to thousands of elementary, middle and high school students across the upper valley. Targeting underserved communities, the program aims to reach students in schools where budget cuts have severely impacted music and arts education. The pandemic forced us to pause our educational programming in schools, but we developed a series of virtual events aimed at adult audiences. This virtual format was an especially successful one for these kinds of events, allowing us to broaden our audience beyond those geographically proximate to the event location.”
