Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: FOOD & CLOTHING PROGRAMS: Although Aslan's programs primarily target the needs of children, we also provide a limited number of services for the parents of our children. With food donations and financial gifts from local churches and from CROP Walk, Aslan also maintains an emergency pantry to provide food for the families of our children. At Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas we provide sumptuous baskets filled with hams, turkeys and all the trimmings to insure our families are blessed during these holiday seasons. Over Christmas, Aslan provides assistance to many of our most needy families through our adopt-a-family program. Additionally, local churches adopt each Aslan youngster and provide approximately $50 per child of special gifts at Christmas. In Kind Donations and Grants Received Totaling : $86,558Time $ 34,123Space $ 1,500 Goods $ 50,935FOUNDED IN 1975, ASLAN CONTINUES TO LEAD THE FIELD IN SERVICES TO URBAN, DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN. IN 1996, ASLAN EXPANDED IT'S WORK INTO HAITI, ONE OF THE POOREST NATIONS ON EARTH. ASLAN NOW OWNS LAND IN HAITI AND IS DEVELOPING THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS TO SERVE HAITIAN CHILDREN AND ADULTS: 1) MEDICAL CENTER; 2)CHURCH AND VILLAGE SCHOOL; 3) MISSION TRAINING SCHOOL; 4) ORPHANAGE. THE RELATIONSHIP-BASED APPROACH THAT IS A HALLMARK OF ASLAN'S PROGRAMS IN THE US IS THE SAME IN HAITI. ASLAN ALSO REGULARLY TAKES SELECT ASLAN TEEN-AGERS FROM OUR PROGRAMS IN THE US TO HAITI TO SERVE AS COUNSELORS FOR OUR HAITIAN CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS AND TO MEET OTHER HUMANITARIAN NEEDS. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: VOLUNTEER & GENERAL PROGRAMS: A hallmark of Aslan's success throughout our rich 40-year history has been the number of caring individuals who volunteer their time and talents to help the children of Aslan. Our volunteer force has grown to 500 individuals who serve as mentor/tutors, Right Choices teachers, office volunteers (mailings, data entry, etc.), trip chaperones, coaches, attorneys (legal aid for Aslan youth & families), accountants, Board of Director's members, Advisory Council members, choir & dance instructors, Haiti Project volunteers and on and on. PRESIDENTIAL POINT OF LIGHT: Because of the large number of volunteers Aslan employs and the many and varied ways our volunteers serve the community in need, President George H. W. Bush designated Aslan Youth Ministries an American point of Light in September of 1991. Aslan was chosen for this great honor from among 15,000 worthy nominees received by President Bush during his administration. (see related article on Aslan website, www.aslanyouth.org).NOTE: A TOTAL OF over 400 CHILDREN ARE SERVED THROUGH THE SERVICES OUTLINED ABOVE (200 CHILDREN STATESIDE IN NEW JERSEY AND 200 CHILDREN IN HAITI). SEVERAL HUNDRED ADULTS ARE SERVED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS WELL AND OVER 1,000 HAITIAN ADULTS ARE SERVED EACH YEAR THROUGH OUR MEDICAL TEAMS AND IN OTHER WAYS. IRS990/Desc0YOUTH CLASSES: Throughout the week and throughout the year, Aslan provides afternoon and evening Right Choices classes for 120 youth, ages 6 - 18. Once again, education is at the heart of each class with our purpose to provide strong moral guidance through teaching Judeo-Christian values. Our goal is to develop close relationships of trust and encourage young people to make good decisions that will benefit them and their fellow man. Much time is spent in anger management training, conflict resolution and the basics of how to treat others as you desire to be treated. Children learn the value of working together, recognizing that one's world does not revolve simply around your personal needs. Numerous educational & recreational activities are employed through the youth classes, including: back to-school clothing, field trips, holiday gift programs, nutritious snacks, holiday food baskets, etc. During the summer months, ASLAN operates summer day camps for 100 children. A centerpiece of Aslan's summer program is our Haiti Project. Since 1996, Aslan has taken select teenagers to Ouanaminthe, Haiti, a remote village near the Dominican Republic border. Spending 12 days in the most difficult conditions - with brutal heat, no electricity and amidst an entire nation in abject poverty. Our Aslan youth gain a new perspective on their problems in America and a renewed desire to achieve in school. Each year we perform a variety of humanitarian aid projects including: providing staff nurses for a medical clinic and distributing medical supplies; distributing eye glasses; construction projects; and, operating a day camp for school children. In Kind Donations and Grants Received Totaling : $234,474Time $ 187,503Space $ 29,700 Goods $ 17,271

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0MENTOR/TUTORIAL PROGRAM: Education of the mind, body and spirit is at the very heart of each Aslan program. Without educating the whole person, children are left without the tools necessary to be a productive and well-adjusted member of society. It costs thousands of dollars each year for each individual incarcerated or receiv1ng public support. Any investment in education to encourage a young person to achieve their God-given potential is well worth the price! ASLAN has developed a successful and highly respected mentor/tutorial program in which ASLAN'S volunteer tutors work one-on-one and provide much-needed educational and emotional support for their students. The heart of this program is the relationships that are built between mentors and children. Many individuals spend quality hours with their students outside of tutoring - attending cultural events, taking the children home on weekends for church activities, sporting events etc. ASLAN incorporates a peer-mentoring program that involves a number of high school students. ASLAN offers substantial scholarship assistance to students who are regular participants in our youth classes and mentor/tutorial programs. ASLAN has provided over $50,000 in scholarship assistance to graduates of our programs. In Kind Donations and Grants Received Totaling : $65,061Time $41,501Space $23,200Goods $ 360

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0RECREATION:Each ASLAN program provides wonderful recreational and cultural enrichment activities for area youth. These field trips and activities include: bicycle adventure trips; swimming; winter alpine ski trips; whitewater rafting; hiking; summer camping; and, summer softball. As emphasized previously, Aslan seeks to teach young people basic life skills through each of these activities - how to relate as a team; how to control your emotions; how to consider the needs of others above your own needs; how to make wise decisions, even in the midst of difficult situations; recognizing that many choices you make as a young person will permanently impact your future. CYCLING PROGRAM: Aslan operates numerous major rides throughout the year for children from our programs. The goal of our cycling program is to stretch young people and encourage them to look beyond the difficulty of their home situations. Cycling for long distances over a variety of busy roads and highways requires strenuous training and strict discipline. Aslan youth learn valuable life skills such as working as a team, watching out for others, camping and other things they could learn in no better environment. In Kind Donations and Grants Received Totaling : $89,482Time $ 55,082Space $ 10,500Goods $ 23,900

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: FOOD & CLOTHING PROGRAMS: Although Aslan's programs primarily target the needs of children, we also provide a limited number of services for the parents of our children.
