Mission and Program Overview

Mission

I-MAK is a team of lawyers and scientists increasing access to affordable medicines by making sure the patent system works. We at I-MAK believe:The patent system was designed to balance innovation in medicines and the dissemination of new treatments to society. The current patent system disproportionately represents and upholds private interests over the public good. This can and must change.Such change should be informed by patients' needs.Armed with the best evidence, our lawyers and scientists are giving the public a voice in a system that impacts their health and lives.

To build a more just and equitable medicines system for all.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

In 2022, i-mak's public education program aimed to make the role of patents central in the drug pricing conversation. I-mak developed and launched the drug patent book, a database with the first comprehensive record of the patents related to america's most popular prescription drugs. To provide resourcess to policymakers, media, and the public, i-mak published a summary of the patent and market data on america's topselling drugs and released its most recent report in the overpatented, overpriced series. I-mak used communications and stakeholder engagement to reveal how structural inequities at every level of the medicines system - brought into sharp focus by the covid-19 pandemic - lead to unnecessary suffering and death for millions of people worldwide. Additionally, i-mak released its "strengthening competition blueprint" that outlines several recommendations for how to strengthen a competitive market through patent and drug regulatory reforms. This "blueprint for reform" was created using i-mak's participatory changemaking model to generate new solutions by bringing people together who are ideologically, geographically, and sectorally diverse to discuss and shape the future of medicines, starting with the patent system.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0IN 2022, I-MAK'S PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM AIMED TO MAKE THE ROLE OF PATENTS CENTRAL IN THE DRUG PRICING CONVERSATION.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE 990 IS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS BEFORE IT IS FILED WITH THE IRS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2IN CONNECTION WITH ANY ACTUAL OR POSSIBLE CONFLICT OF INTEREST, A BOARD MEMBER MUST DISCLOSE THE EXISTENCE OF THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST AND DISCLOSE ALL MATERIAL FACTS. THE REMAINING BOARD OR COMMITTEE MEMBERS SHALL DECIDE IF A CONFLICT OF INTEREST EXISTS. IF A CONFLCIT IS FOUND TO EXIST, THE BOARD MEMBER TAKES A SABBATICAL, RESIGNS OR REMOVES THE CONFLICT.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WORK WITH AN EXTERNAL COMPENSATION FIRM TO REVIEW COMPENSATION PACKAGES OF THE CO-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS AND TO OBTAIN INDEPENDENT COMPARABILITY DATA IN DETERMINING THAT THE COMPENSATION IS JUST AND REASONABLE. THIS PROCESS OCCURS WHENEVER A TOP EXECUTIVE IS HIRED, WHEN THEIR EMPLOYMENT TERMS ARE RENEWED OR EXTENDED OR WHEN THEIR COMPENSATION IS MODIFIED. THIS PROCESS IS DOCUMENTED AND APPROVED THROUGH MEMORANDUM WITH THE EXTERNAL FIRM AND ANY FINAL DECISIONS IN BOARD MINUTES/RESOLUTIONS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4THE ORGANIZATION MAKES ITS GOVERNING DOCUMENTS, CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY, AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC UPON REQUEST.
