Mission

Thomas moran trust, inc. (the trust) fully recognizes the value of our nation's landmarks as places of inspiration with strong educational potential. It is, therefore, dedicated to accurately restoring, maintaining, and interpreting the legacy of the studio, a national historic landmark in east hampton, new york. In 1885, the great american landscape painter, thomas moran, and his wife, mary nimmo moran, moved into their new studio and home, a queen-anne style building designed by moran himself. The property, overlooking town pond and the village green, offers one of the most distinquished vistas on long island and serves as the gateway to east hampton's main street historic district. The thomas moran trust fully recognizes the potential of our nation's landmarks as places of inspiration with strong educational potential. Formed in 2007, the trust is engaged in a capital campaign to raise $5 million to fund the restoration and establish a small, initial endowment. Vacant for some years, and suffering the effects of time and climate, the studio is being stabilized and in urgent need of repair.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Refund of government grant -197,940.

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

Financial Statement Notes

PART II, LINE 5:

The policy, written in the agreement, is that the $500,000 is restricted for the cost of labor and materials incurred in the renovation of the thomas moran building. The incorporated village of east hampton maintains a lien on the property as long as the trust has any unspent funds from the easement.

PART II, LINE 9:

The trust received $500,000 from the incorporated village of east hampton in exchange for a preservation and conservation easement on the thomas moran studio house which was declared a national landmark in 1966. The easement limits the size of the building to its existing floor areas and also requires that access to the building and land remain accessible to the public. The $500,000 is restricted for the cost of labor and materials incurred in the renovation of the thomas moran building. The incorporated village of east hampton maintains a lien on the property as long as the trust has any unspent funds from the easement. As of december 31, 2013, the total amount available and restricted for the renovation of the building is $500,000.

PART X, LINE 2:

The trust has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. Periods ending december 31, 2010 and subsequent remain subject to examination by applicable taxing authorities.

IRS990/MissionDesc0IN 1885, THE GREAT AMERICAN LANDSCAPE PAINTER, THOMAS MORAN, AND HIS WIFE, MARY NIMMO MORAN, MOVED INTO THEIR NEW STUDIO AND HOME, A QUEEN-ANNE STYLE BUILDING DESIGNED BY MORAN HIMSELF. IT IS, THEREFORE, DEDICATED TO ACCURATELY RESTORING, MAINTAINING, AND INTERPRETING THE LEGACY OF THE STUDIO, A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK IN EAST HAMPTON, NEW YORK.
