Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the AVA Foundation is to promote evidence-based vascular access practice:1. Increase awareness of the risks and benefits associated with vascular access.2. Improve patient safety.3. Define the vascular access specialty.4. Optimize professional knowledge and skills.5. Share best practices.6. Promote research in vascular activities.

The AVA Foundation is a public charity focused on education and research support to help save lives through risk-free vascular access. The foundation promotes evidence-based clinical practice and serves clinicians, students and vascular access patients and their families.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The AVA Foundation provides grants for primary research to collect the data and evidence for best practices in vascular access care. By helping to develop evidence-based protocols, the AVA Foundation seeks to effectively improve patient outcomes by providing funds to healthcare practitioners to pursue higher education so they may deliver the highest level of vascular access care. Travel award scholarships are available to clinicians to attend the Association for Vascular Access (AVA) Annual Scientific Meeting. This meeting promotes hands-on involvement and education. The AVA Foundation also supports educational projects that promote quality vascular access care to patients.--
miniMAGIC - In March 2018 AVA Foundation announced it would be funding a major innovative research project intended to improve pediatric vascular access outcomes. The initiative, called miniMAGIC was intended to develop a novel pediatrics algorithm that produces evidence-based recommendations for when a particular vascular access device is appropriate for use. The project aims to provide healthcare professionals with an evidence and expert-based criteria for the selection of infusion catheters, including vascular access devices (VADs) in pediatrics across Australia and the United States. As of 2018, no standardized decision-making process existed for the selection of VADs in pediatric patients. The uncoordinated approach to VAD decision-making leads to inappropriate devices being inserted, which results in significant, preventable harm to vascular access dependent children and inefficient treatment outcomes.--
