Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Form 990 is prepared and reviewed by an independent CPA firm. The return is also reviewed by the Director of the U.S. Office and the Board. Once their approval is received, the Form 990 is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The finance and management teams monitor transactions. Any potential conflicts of interest identified are brought to the board's attention and the member with a conflict excuses himself from the decision making process. The remaining board members then vote to decide whether the transaction is in the best interests of the organization. Board members and officers are required to disclose potential conflicts of interest on whenever they might occur.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The NightLight Ministry independent board approves the salaries of the Executive Director and CFO during the annual budget process. Comparability data regarding the salaries is provided to the Board at this time and any discussion and decisions made are recorded in the board minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The prganizational documents, Form 1023, and Form 990 are available upon request during regular business hours at the office of records.

IRS990/Desc0Between July 2014 and June 2015, NightLight in Bangkok provided alternative employment, vocational training, spiritual development, meals, health care, and life-skills training to an average of 36 women who were exiting or at risk of exploitation in the sex industry. As part of their support, NightLight provided childcare for an average of 15 children under the age of 5 and tuition scholarship to 23 children. NightLight makes contact with several hundred women in prostitution and trafficking each year and offers assistance and intervention. 103 internationally trafficked victims were assisted and 18 were repatriated during the fiscal year. Additionally, 4 children of these women also received assistance. The shelter NightLight has been operational for victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation for the second year and houses many of the internationally trafficked women we assist. NightLight also addresses the sex-industry through activities in our outreach center in one of the major red-light districts of Bangkok. The coffee shop on the bottom floor of the outreach, now in its second year, provides jobs and has been a safe space to connect with the men that frequent the surrounding red-light district. In partnership with the MST project (Men and the Sex Trade), volunteers have had significant conversations with dozens of men a month at CityLight Cafe. The outreach center offers weekly English classes and quarterly medical clinics, and this year began to offer free salon services to the women who work in the area (hair, nails, and makeup) as another means of building relationships with these women, connecting them to resources and job opportunities. Bangkok continues to make twice weekly visits to the bars and to areas frequented by internationally trafficked women to make connections and offer help 200 women per month. NightLight actively does awareness-raising through trainings, speeches, and media that reaches a global audience. NightLight Bangkok received almost 500 visitors this year who heard about the work of NightLight and learned about how to engage with the problem. NightLight partners with many other NGOs and government organizations to combat trafficking through investigation, intervention, assistance, shelter, and repatriation.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, NightLight International office in Branson, Missouri has continued to do outreach in the commercial sex industry in the region. We have continued to see growth in building relationships in the industry with women, reaching out to between 110 and 120 women each month with gifts, through individual conversations and on-going relationship with between 20 and 30 of those women each month. Five women left the industry in the course of the year with the support and resources of NightLight, and many continue to be a part of the restoration program in various capacities. As part of NightLight's awareness & education program, the team educated numerous individuals at more than 20 community events, nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, and awareness trainings throughout the year.

IRS990ScheduleF/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0NightLight Ministry only works to grant funds to sister-affiliated entities it has known or worked with for years. NightLight Ministry is not a massive grant-making entity. NightLight Ministry accepts donations on behalf of NightLight Foundation for US Citizens who want to receive a US tax-deductible receipt. The donations are intended to fund the restoration programs in Bangkok, Thailand, run by NightLight Foundation. Currently, reports of how grant money was spent by NightLight Foundation are obtained verbally during monthly board meetings.
IRS990ScheduleF/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Through expense reporting that will be required, the foreign expenditures need to be classified by program (prevention, intervention, restoration, or education). These amounts will be maintained in spreadsheets.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Form 990 is prepared and reviewed by an independent CPA firm. The return is also reviewed by the Director of the U.S. Office and the Board. Once their approval is received, the Form 990 is filed.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The finance and management teams monitor transactions.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The NightLight Ministry independent board approves the salaries of the Executive Director and CFO during the annual budget process. Comparability data regarding the salaries is provided to the Board at this time and any discussion and decisions made are recorded in the board minutes.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3The prganizational documents, Form 1023, and Form 990 are available upon request during regular business hours at the office of records.
