Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The choir school of delaware (csd) provides a transformational experience for youth ages 7-17 in the greater wilmington area, the majority of whom are considered at-risk. The choir school offers a year-round education program that has a strong legacy of serving and engaging wilmington's youth and families through music and mentoring. Students receive full merit scholarships for their participation in the program. Our students continue to achieve a 100% graduation rate from high school and go on to colleges, universities, trades schools and military service. Our intergenerational model creates an environment where no child is far from an adult who models good behavior, offers encouragement and supports the child's academic needs. Csd continues to reach out to urban youth and provide a safe, productive and creative space; music and mentoring work hand-in-hand so that "harmonizing life and learning" is at the core of the choir school's mission.

To provide instruction to youth, without regard to their religious affiliation, in the choral arts, emphasizing excellence in the recital hall as well as in choristers' personal lives, and to instill in the choristers the qualities of discipline, responsibility, leadership and teamwork, and to engage in related activities.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The endowment has been established and is managed to provide a predictible stream of funding to the organization's programs.

PART X, LINE 2:

In a letter dated july 20, 2007, the internal revenue service determined that the cathedral choir school of delaware, inc., a not-for-profit organization, is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purpose may be subject to taxation as unrelated business income. Generally accepted accounting principles prescribe rules for the recognition, measurement, classification, and disclosure in the financial statements of uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken in the organization's tax returns. Management has determined that the organization does not have any uncertain tax positions or associated unrecognized benefits that materially impact the financial statements or related disclosures. Since tax matters are subject to some degree of uncertainty, there can be no assurance that the organization's tax returns will not be challenged by the taxing authorities and that the organization will not be subject to additional tax, penalties and interest as a result of such challenge. Income tax returns of the organization for 2011, 2012 and 2013 are subject to examination by tax authorities, generally for three years after they were filed.

IRS990/Desc0MUSIC - STUDENTS SANG IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH A REPERTOIRE THAT SPANS FIVE CENTURIES. PIANO AND VOICE LESSONS DEVELOP THEIR DEEPER APPRECIATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS WHICH ARE EVALUATED REGULARLY BECAUSE OF THE NEAR WEEKLY PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE. THE CHOIR BEGAN A NEW INITIATIVE BY ACCEPTING INVITATIONS TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE AREA. THE CHORISTERS SING WEEKLY WITH PROFESSIONAL ADULTS; THIS ALLOWS THEM TO PERFORM MUSIC AT A HIGH LEVEL AND DISPLAY THEIR LEARNED LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO THE BROADER COMMUNITY. THIS AMBITIOUS AND RIGOROUS SINGING SCHEDULE TESTS THE CHOIR'S SKILLS, SEEKS TO GROW OUR AUDIENCE BASE, PROMOTES THE PROGRAM, AND OF COURSE GIVES THE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SING FOR VARIED GROUPS OF PEOPLE THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY INCLUDING: THE DELAWARE ART MUSEUM, A MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY CELEBRATION WITH THE MUSIC SCHOOL OF DELAWARE, THE DELAWARE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, AND WINTERTHUR. THERE WAS A 33% INCREASE IN ENROLLMENT TO THE PROGRAM DUE TO BETTER EXPOSURE AND RECRUITMENT EFFORTS. LEARNING IS MEASURED AS THE STUDENTS PROGRESS THROUGH LEVELS AND GAIN ACTUAL EXPERIENCE. WE BELIEVE THAT BETTER MUSICIANSHIP WILL LEAD TO COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER GROUPS IN THE FUTURE AND MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE GREAT MUSIC.
