(cuaf) is organized and operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare within the meaning of section 501(c)(4). Specifically, cuaf aims to protect consumers by advocating more consumer-favorable laws and regulatory reform. It works to inform and educate consumers and seeks to influence the marketplace. Cuaf's purposes are to educate the public regarding consumer safety issues and to advocate policies, legislation and regulation (including regulatory reform) that ensure a fair and safe marketplace for consumers. The range of issues cuaf addresses through its advocacy and lobbying activities include: universal access to quality health care, the right to safe, effective, and affordable prescription drugs, improving patient safety, with an emphasis on reducing hospital acquired infections and medical errors, safe food and products, communication quality choice and fairness, financial services and energy policy. The consumers union action fund promoted better understanding of american's health care options under the newly launched affordable care act by spending money to promote the health law helper, a free anonymous tool to give people personalized information specific to their own circumstances. The promotion brought 40,000 new people to the tool and engaged them in better decision making with respect to their new health insurance choices.”
