DX Expeditions, Inc raises funding primarily from amateur radio operators worldwide to support temporary radio operations from remote locations, known in the hobby as DX operations. Typically there is a long planning cycle followed by an active operations period each year of a month or less. All activities ceased during 2018. The DX Operation for 2018 was to have taken place on Bouvet Island, A very remote French possession in the southern Atlantic Ocean. However a series of mechanical problems with the ship transporting the participants along with very rough weather caused the DX Operation to be canceled due to the extreme danger to the participants had they persevered.
