Activity 2

Stem education: supports programs that improve teacher instruction and student learning through the interdisciplinary approach defined as stem education. Teacher programs are designed to engage teachers in research experiences, update their knowledge and help them translate their learning back to their classrooms. Some programs are designed to create student interest and enthusiasm for stem careers, better prepare them in math and science, and offer early college industry-driven learning experiences that result in certifications, and two- and four-year degrees in stem fields. Awarded 4 grants in 2011 and continued oversight of 2 grants for engineering pathways designed to expand engineering and applied technology programs and broaden k-12 outreach at four community colleges. Sfaz began development of the az stem network, a comprehensive approach to embedding stem education in schools and districts.

Activity 3

Graduate research fellowships: recruit a significant number of the best students to arizona - top 5% nationwide to create a "culture of research" and plant the seed that arizona is competitive with the top research institutions for the best of the best students. 40 fellows funded in fields of sustainability, bioscience, and information/communications technology.other program service accomplishments are described in schedule o
