Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Other

Advocacy. Action. Impact.

Other

When you call NJ Aid for Animals (NJAFA), you are greeted with this message: "You've called us because you have an animal problem you need help with."

Other

Since 2005 we have been "boots on the ground". All volunteers with no brick and mortar building but functioning out of our homes as fosters:

Other

No other animal welfare organization in South Jersey is all volunteer with no huge salaries

Other

No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey is open 24/7, including holidays.

Other

No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey will get involved in animal cruelty.

Other

No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey builds dog houses and gives them out for free.

Other

No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey area gives out FREE life-saving distemper parvo vaccines AND flea treatments

Other

In 2017 we not only "saved" animals from contracting diseases on a large scale through our Pets in the City program but we also saved dozens of individual dogs and cats taken from crisis and placed into loving homes. Also through our HALT (Helping Animals' Lives Today Program) alone we fixed 169 OWNED pets JUST from Camden. This does not include all the feral cats we fixed. Remember we are all volunteers with no government funding.

Other

We are a clearinghouse of information for pet owners and a great resource for people reaching out with pet problems. Even other animal charities call NJAFA for guidance, information, resource sharing and general questions. We receive no government funding, no municipal funding and have been able to deliver all our programs with only donations from the public.

Other

NJAFA runs very lean and counts on the support of its volunteers, board of directors and advisory allowing us to save thousands of dollars each year on professional services which funding can go to the animals.

Other

Our board includes the attorney that wrote the Amicus Brief that got the Michael Vick dogs to Best Friends, a veterinarian and an internationally known dog bite expert. Our Advisory Board who lend their expertise to NJAFA includes another lawyer, a social media expert, a nonprofit CPA, and the president of a PR agency recognized as one of the top PR marketing firms in the region.

Other

In order to maintain transparency, compliance and check and balance of books we pay an independent consultant to keep our books that is not connected to our board or advisory board.

Other

Volunteers continue to donate by tabling at events for NJAFA, fostering animals, transporting animals, planning and implementing fundraisers, clerical tasks, cleaning, a para-legal to do research and myriad "other" volunteers who help at special once-a-year events.

Other

This Federal Form 990EZ is reviewed by the Treasurer and then by the full Board prior to filing.

Other

Animal Abuse

Other

Njafa reports and follows the abusers through the court system. We work directly with cruelty officers in camden and testify frequently for abuse cases and intentional or accidental breeding which is prohibited.local humane law enforcements report and get convictions but no one follows the abusers through the court system to ensure the abuser paid his dues, restitution or completed his community service. Njafa will also file the charges if local law enforcement or humane enforcement does not want to file charges.

Other

Solutions to animal issues help people too

Other

We receive dozens of calls and emails every day from people all over the state of nj who either need to give up an animal, don't have food, can't afford medical treatment or myriad of other reasons. We offer a list of medical financial aid organizations, low cost vet services, help to rehome an animal, offer food if they can't afford or just try to walk the individual through the problem and find a solution together. By resolving ways to keep a pet at home, it reduces the number of animals going through the impound facilities (shelters). Njafa works very closely with local animal control who will alert njafa of a family that may want to surrender their pet but we can help the family keep the pet by something as simple as a flea treatment! We pride ourselves on solving a pet owners' issue and actually circumventing it right from the shelter.

Other

Community Outreach and Collaboration

Other

Whether collaborating with the local fire dept or FOP Lodge in Camden, or other organizations to network an animal, NJAFA's President is on the board of another non-profit in Camden NJ made up of the infrastructure of the City of Camden, vis a vis, clergy, academics, educators, police, fire, social service agencies, private businesses and other non-profits to recognize and collaborate on the animal problems within that area.

Other

ONGOING INITIATIVES:

Other

Dog House Project

Other

NJAFA focus is on recycling, reusing and rehoming. In 2007, NJAFA began partnering with a local fence company to make dog houses from leftover privacy fences. We add a little carpet flap on the front to keep it extra warm, straw for bedding and NJAFA delivers the warm dog houses to dogs forced to live outside. It's a win win for the environment, fence company and of course the pooches. Although NJAFA receives a very generous discount on the houses, we still solicit individual and corporate sponsors to donate so we can keep up with the demand. If we don't get a sponsor we can't get the dog houses. The same fence company also put up a gate at a home where a chained dog was living that had a fence but no gate. The only thing between life at the end of a chain and a big yard to play was a gate. Every year, we deliver dog houses with straw to dogs forced to live outside.

Other

Pets in the City

Other

Lifesaving vaccines and flea treatment

Other

Every spring, since 2011 when we started our signature event doing what no one else does Pets in the City, we bring FREE vaccines and flea treatment to the residents in Camden, NJ. Very few people there have transportation, so we partner with a business there to set up. 2017 was no different when pet owners lined up around the block to take advantage of this FREE program AND at the same time, we get people to sign up to get their pets fixed! We gave out 206 vaccines and flea treatments to dogs and 53 vaccines and flea treatments to cats. We fundraise all year to purchase the vaccines and flea treatment. Most of the pets are surrendered due to contracting the deadly Parvo-virus or because the pets have fleas. By taking our services to the residents in the Spring, we can head off the virus and fleas! At Pets in the City, we also give out donated leashes and collars. We also give remaining flea treatments to the animal control officers to pass out after we are gone.

Other

Fundraising, donating and giving

Other

While we are all volunteers, we still require money for critical infrastructure. We need to purchase liability insurance for our board of directors, car insurance, volunteer insurance, event insurance and foster insurance. We also have to pay for gasoline, our cell phone, our landline coming into our foster based rescue, printing of collateral and so many other operating funds that are vital to our operation. Without these services, we will cease to exist. We receive NO government funding which is why we rely heavily on private donations, fundraising, and wills and bequeaths.

Other

There is no other animal welfare association, agency, humane charity or organization that does what we do in South Jersey as ALL volunteers and services for FREE. With total transparency, we are encouraged to educate our donors to choose NJ Aid for Animals to give to. We have an outstanding reputation throughout the state and, more importantly with state officials, other rescues and the community at large.

Other

When you give to NJAFA you are donating something of value in exchange for other things of value -- the good work of our organization and the benefit it provides to the communities we are serving. This is a fair exchange and one both we and our donors can feel good about.

Other

The last words you hear on our answering machine are "Thank you for thinking of NJ Aid for Animals when choosing a charity to give to."

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1When you call NJ Aid for Animals (NJAFA), you are greeted with this message: "You've called us because you have an animal problem you need help with."
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Since 2005 we have been "boots on the ground". All volunteers with no brick and mortar building but functioning out of our homes as fosters:
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3No other animal welfare organization in South Jersey is all volunteer with no huge salaries
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey is open 24/7, including holidays.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey will get involved in animal cruelty.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey builds dog houses and gives them out for free.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt7No other animal welfare organization in S. Jersey area gives out FREE life-saving distemper parvo vaccines AND flea treatments
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt8In 2017 we not only "saved" animals from contracting diseases on a large scale through our Pets in the City program but we also saved dozens of individual dogs and cats taken from crisis and placed into loving homes. Also through our HALT (Helping Animals' Lives Today Program) alone we fixed 169 OWNED pets JUST from Camden. This does not include all the feral cats we fixed. Remember we are all volunteers with no government funding.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt9We are a clearinghouse of information for pet owners and a great resource for people reaching out with pet problems. Even other animal charities call NJAFA for guidance, information, resource sharing and general questions. We receive no government funding, no municipal funding and have been able to deliver all our programs with only donations from the public.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt10NJAFA runs very lean and counts on the support of its volunteers, board of directors and advisory allowing us to save thousands of dollars each year on professional services which funding can go to the animals.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt11Our board includes the attorney that wrote the Amicus Brief that got the Michael Vick dogs to Best Friends, a veterinarian and an internationally known dog bite expert. Our Advisory Board who lend their expertise to NJAFA includes another lawyer, a social media expert, a nonprofit CPA, and the president of a PR agency recognized as one of the top PR marketing firms in the region.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt12In order to maintain transparency, compliance and check and balance of books we pay an independent consultant to keep our books that is not connected to our board or advisory board.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt13Volunteers continue to donate by tabling at events for NJAFA, fostering animals, transporting animals, planning and implementing fundraisers, clerical tasks, cleaning, a para-legal to do research and myriad "other" volunteers who help at special once-a-year events.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt14This Federal Form 990EZ is reviewed by the Treasurer and then by the full Board prior to filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt15Animal Abuse
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt16NJAFA REPORTS AND FOLLOWS THE ABUSERS THROUGH THE COURT SYSTEM.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt17Solutions to animal issues help people too
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt18WE RECEIVE DOZENS OF CALLS AND EMAILS EVERY DAY FROM PEOPLE ALL OVER THE STATE OF NJ WHO EITHER NEED TO GIVE UP AN ANIMAL, DON'T HAVE FOOD, CAN'T AFFORD MEDICAL TREATMENT OR MYRIAD OF OTHER REASONS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt19Community Outreach and Collaboration
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt20Whether collaborating with the local fire dept or FOP Lodge in Camden, or other organizations to network an animal, NJAFA's President is on the board of another non-profit in Camden NJ made up of the infrastructure of the City of Camden, vis a vis, clergy, academics, educators, police, fire, social service agencies, private businesses and other non-profits to recognize and collaborate on the animal problems within that area.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt21ONGOING INITIATIVES:
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt22Dog House Project
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt23NJAFA focus is on recycling, reusing and rehoming.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt24Pets in the City
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt25Lifesaving vaccines and flea treatment
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt26Every spring, since 2011 when we started our signature event doing what no one else does Pets in the City, we bring FREE vaccines and flea treatment to the residents in Camden, NJ.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt27FUNDRAISING, DONATING AND GIVING
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt28While we are all volunteers, we still require money for critical infrastructure.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt29There is no other animal welfare association, agency, humane charity or organization that does what we do in South Jersey as ALL volunteers and services for FREE. With total transparency, we are encouraged to educate our donors to choose NJ Aid for Animals to give to. We have an outstanding reputation throughout the state and, more importantly with state officials, other rescues and the community at large.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt30When you give to NJAFA you are donating something of value in exchange for other things of value -- the good work of our organization and the benefit it provides to the communities we are serving. This is a fair exchange and one both we and our donors can feel good about.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt31The last words you hear on our answering machine are "Thank you for thinking of NJ Aid for Animals when choosing a charity to give to."
