Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To fight bias, bigotry and racism by promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions, and cultures through advocation and education.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Since 1972, Community Nashville (formerly NCCJ) has been dedicated to building a Middle Tennessee community that does not tolerate bias, bigotry, or racism. We are best known for our barrier breaking youth diversity leadership programs called Building Bridges. Community Nashville also advocates for and raises awareness of issues of bias, bigotry and racism and threats to human rights in the region.Building Bridges:Funding would support Community Nashville's Building Bridges programs, offering diversity education for young adults. Administered through a partnership with the Oasis Center, Building Bridges consists primarily of multi-day residential camps ranging from two to five days, including Camp Anytown conducted each summer. The camps and programs educate youth about the root causes of prejudice, inspiring them to face their own feelings and opinions while learning to respect and understand others. Building Bridges also includes the Youth Advisory Council, a year-long group of young adults who help plan and implement the camps as well as work with other organizations and events, like the annual Martin Luther King Day celebration. Results:During the 2015-2016 year, more than 200 youth were served through Building Bridges camps, Youth Advisory outreach and Cultural Identity groups. In the fall of 2015, we conducted a special MiniTown uniting students of Oasis Youth Action teams in a way that transformed our vision of youth voice. This camp was different because participants brought experiences with leadership and the idea they can change the world. It is because they are incubated in the programs of the Oasis Center that, at its core, is committed to youth voice and leadership. Our activities and dialogues only propelled what our students have already been called to do: serve. we introduced College Town, conducting a camp for students from six local colleges. The Building Bridges Program Director, Tasha Fletcher, was commissioned to conduct cultural competency training for administrators, providing experiential activities and dialogues regarding racism, privilege, identity and being an ally. These efforts reached 449 teachers and administrators at MNPS. Additionally, Tasha worked with other organizations and government agencies reaching 230 stakeholders. Continuing Objectives:Community Nashville and Building Bridges will continue to conduct these programs, in order to:1. Increase the total number of campers who attend. 2. Ensuring the diversity of camp participants continues to match the demographics of our city.3. Finding more opportunities for youth to interact with adults in the community, sharing their voice and experience.$52,000$52,000
