“Mpi has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm and has established the following review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate. When the form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by management and is ready to be filed with the internal revenue service, it's submitted electronically to members of the organization's governing body for any comments prior to its submission. The governing body is provided with one week to review the prepared form 990 and provide their comments. Any comments are then grouped, summarized and provided to the audit committee for their review. Each issue is documented and addressed until the return is finalized and approved for filing.”
“Mpi has a written conflict of interest policy, which is monitored and enforced annually by the board of directors. Each director, principal officer and member of a committee with governing board delegated powers must annually sign a statement which affirms such person has received a copy of the conflicts of interest policy; has read and understands the policy; has agreed to comply with the policy; and understands the organization is charitable and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, an interested person must disclose the existence of the financial interest and be given the opportunity to disclose all material facts to the directors and members of committees with governing board delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangement. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person, he/she must leave the governing board or committee meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. Any discussion regarding the conflict of interest transaction is documented in the minutes of the board meetings. The minutes of the board meeting shall reflect the conflict of interest that was disclosed, the name of the interested person, and final discussion on the conflict of interest transaction.”
“The organization used the following process to determine the compensation of the president: in 2020, mpi engaged a third party consulting firm to review and conduct a compensation study. In addition, the executive staff of the organization provided the finance committee of the board of directors with extensive research and comparisons from the market, including the forms 990 of similar organizations. The finance committee used this data to determine and approve his compensation, which was approved by the board and documented. Compensation of the organization's other officers is determined using comparability data, including the forms 990 of similar organizations. The finance committee reviews and approves their compensation, which is then approved by the board of directors and documented. The process was last undertaken in 2020.”
“The organization makes its forms 990 and 1023 available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue code. The form 990 is also posted on the organization's website www.movingpictureinstitute.org, guidestar.org and other similar types of websites. In addition, the financial statements, governing documents and conflict of interest policy are available to the public upon written request.”
“Board member stacey parks provided production and consulting services through her single-member llc and was paid $52,500 in 2020 for the services provided.”
“Payroll service fee: program service expenses 15,557. Management and general expenses 400. Fundraising expenses 259. Total expenses 16,216. Film productions: program service expenses 648,805. Management and general expenses 18,009. Fundraising expenses 11,677. Total expenses 678,491.”
“The process for assuming responsibility for the audit of the oraganization and for the selection of an independent accountant has not changed since the prior year.”
“Mpi recognizes the effect of tax positions only if they are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that mpi has no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement disclosure and/or recognition. Mpi is no longer subject to examinations by applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to december 31, 2017.”
