Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A - Program Service Accomplishments

Sowing Seeds For Life (SSFL) operates as a food security program. Open Monday - Friday from 7:30-4pm for administration, inventory, logistics, product pickup and distribution to our satellite pantry locations as well as other charity programs. SSFL is dedicated to the environment and community in which we serve; to that commitment we plant, grow and harvest locally grown produce with the assistance of volunteers and educators. This produce is gleaned by our trained volunteers brought to our food pantry and distributed to our clients days and often within hours of harvesting. We serve close to 7,000 clients each month with 47% of our clients being children. SSFL works with clients to provide job training and skills educations to enable them to gain employment and become self reliant thus, enabling them to become food secure. Skills training includes: Administrative assistance, data documentation, inventory control, warehousing and logistics, client relations, volunteer coordination, reception, loss prevention and marketing. SSFL also operates a food pantry program in Sweden, Maine that began providing services in 2008. We provide volunteer opportunities for High School and College students as well as service groups and individuals. We conduct educational training on subjects such as cooking, gardening and environmental responsibility. In 2014 the staff and many of the volunteers received Mental Health First Aid certification which allows us to be more understanding of the needs of our clients and provide them the proper information for referral services. Through collaborations with local medical facilities we offer non-invasive medical screening that includes blood pressure, diabetes screening and deep vein ultrasound testing. Additionally, partnerships allow us to provide clothing to pantry clients on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Our Kids Korner program provides after school healthy snacks to children of all ages while they are encouraged to partake in the educational programs that have been professionally designed for our program. .

IRS990/Desc0Sowing Seeds For Life (SSFL) provides beyond basic staple food to our clients We provide them with fresh produce, diapers, household and cleaning products and usually enough to get the average family though about two weeks. Our clients are no and low-income residents of the community. The items in which they receive in addition to those mentioned include CalFresh application assistance, referrals to other service providers and hands on employment skills training. We serve close 7,000 individuals each month and give away over 1 million pounds of food annually. Our program services are unique to the industry in that we serve in a Farmers Market style of operation; this is done for very specific reasons. First, if offers the clients the ability to select the food and items they want and will use thus items are never wasted. Second, it makes for a happy environment for clients who often experience depression and stigma associated with the need to utilize food pantry services, our method plan greatly improves their overall well-being and third, it sheds a light on the needs within our community that give passersby as well as residents the opportunity to visually understand how they can get involved and help those in need. It is an overall positive endeavor. We receive in-kind donations from major and national retailers and volunteer assistance from them as well. Our volunteers assist clients with brief, case management, and application completion for other services such as Cal-Fresh, Edison and the Gas Company among others. Major community events that assist our clients include our annual Easter basket give away (which 200 children or more receive baskets), Back to School supply drive, Thanksgiving Luncheon and Christmas in the Park (where over 600 children received toys and the entire pantry is taken out into the community to serve families). Fundraisers in support of our program include: The La Verne Country Fair, The Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament and the Hunger Walk.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Sowing Seeds For Life (SSFL) operates as a food security program. Our Kids Korner program provides after school healthy snacks to children of all ages while they are encouraged to partake in the educational programs that have been professionally designed for our program. .
