Mission

Peer power is a privately funded tutoring and mentoring program for students in grades 7-12. It inspires and equips students to create and be responsible for their education and future success. It recruits trains and employs over 160 college and high school tutors and mentors to assist disadvantaged students.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

The executive committee of the foundation is comprised of the chair, the vice-chair, the president, the secretary, the treasurer and executive director. The executive committee shall have and exercise all authority of the board of directors in the management of the foundation except as otherwise required by law. The executive committee keeps regular minutes of its proceedings and reports same to the board.

Each director, principal officer and member of a committee with governing board-delegated powers annually signs a statement, which affirms such person has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy, has read and understands the policy, has agreed to comply with the policy, and understands the foundation is charitable and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. In connection with any possible or actual conflict of interest, an interested person must disclose the existence of the financial interest and be given the opportunity to disclose all material facts to the directors and members of committees with governing board delegated powers considering the proposed transaction or arrangement. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person, he/ she shall leave the governing board or committee while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists.

The executive committee determines and approves the ceo's and the executive director's compensation. The ceo approves all other officers and employees' compensation. A compensation study is regularly performed during budget season. The last study was completed in march 2024.

Earn and learn: peer power's earn and learn program creates sustainable career pathways for memphis youth ages 14-24 through comprehensive workforce development. Participants receive intensive job readiness training while earning wages through hands-on work experience. Through strategic business partnerships, the program prepares students from low-income backgrounds for in-demand careers, combining essential workplace skills training with real-world employment opportunities. See form 990, part iii, line 4b.

The foundation has a committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process has not changed from prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and is similarly exempt from tennessee state income taxes under applicable provisions of the tennessee tax regulations. The foundation has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a) of the internal revenue code. The foundation has determined that it has no material uncertain tax positions as of june 30, 2024 and 2023, and it is generally no longer subject to tax examinations by taxing authorities for years prior to 2021.

ADDITIONALLY, IT REQUIRES A MINDSET OF SERVICE, HUMILITY AND URGENCY. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)WE PARTNER WITH THE TEACHERS, SCHOOLS, AND PARENTS TO MENTOR, MODEL AND MOTIVATE YOUNG AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN SOCIOECONOMICALLY CHALLENGED NEIGHBORHOODS. THE 75% OF STUDENTS WE SERVE ARE IN FAMILIES AT OR BELOW THE FEDERAL POVERTY LEVEL. SINCE 2004 WE HAVE TUTORED MORE THAN 1,600,000 HOURS IMPACTING 35,000 CHILDREN. THE SUCCESS COACH IS OFTEN A FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT. PEER POWER'S TRAINING, AND CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND EARNING MODEL PRODUCES OUTSTANDING RESULTS. OUR SUCCESS COACH GRADUATION RATE IS 84%, THE NATIONAL AVERAGE FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT RATE IS LESS THAN 40%. OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO IMPROVE ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHILE CREATING MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS.LONG-TERM GOALS INCLUDE INCREASING HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES AND ACADEMIC PROFICIENCY, AND COLLEGE ENROLLMENT AND/OR CAREER READINESS AMONG PARTICIPANTS.
