Mission and Program Overview

Housing Supportive Services

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Summer Lunch Program is a partnership between the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department, Burlington Schools Food Service, and the Burlington Housing Authority, to administer the Recreation and Nutrition Summer Drop-In Programs at three of BHAs low-income housing communities: Franklin Square, Riverside Apartments and Bobbin Mill Apartments. The program enables low-income children to have summer access to nutritious meals and supervised programming and served 145 Burlington children in the summer of 2014.$11,000-
The HelpFund is a collaborative effort of community service providers and organizations to consolidate assistance and information to more efficiently respond to the emergency needs of people in Chittenden County who are at risk of losing their housing. The fund is fueled by donations from individuals, supporting organizations, foundations and community members. All donations to the HelpFund go directly to those in need. Burlington Supportive Housing Initiatives, Inc. is the sponsoring agency. In 2014, the HelpFund served 67 adults and 39 children$9,019-
The Newmans Own Foundation Grant which provided programming for 113 seniors and adults with disabilities in 2014. Examples of programming include transportation, educational events and therapeutic workshops.Additionally, this funding source is utilized to provide a subsidized homemaker program at one site which provides residents with a subsidy for essential housekeeping services to ensure independent housing is achieved. Individualized care management plans are created and adjusted depending on need. This subsidy program is funded in full by the Newmans Own Foundation and in 2014 can be credited with saving 2 residents from eviction resulting from difficulties maintaining their apartment due to hoarding or other issues.$2,786-
Other Programs:The Hoarding Task Force provides trainings and case consultations related to hoarding and squalor. Often, the referrals made to the BHA housing retention program are complex. Many participants have multiple issues that need resolution. What distinguishes the BHA Retention program from other services is the close working dynamic and access to resources that result in long-term, permanent solutions to preserve housing. In 2014, we assisted 39 people with hoarding and/or squalor issues to remain housed. The Farm Share Program is designated to provide fresh produce for tenants residing at the three Elderly/Disabled high-rises operated by Burlington Housing Authority. In 2014, 26 individuals were served by this program. The Money Camp Financial Literacy Program is a financial literacy program for children ages 10-14. The Money Camp Financial Literacy Curriculum focuses not only on the basic principles of money, money flow, financial vocabulary, financial statements, and basic investing, but also on the important concept that the beliefs and attitudes children develop about money early on in life, have a direct and lasting effect on their financial futures. Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances, we were not able to offer any Money Camp Financial Literacy classes in 2014. We are looking forward to bringing the program back to the family developments in 2015. The Undesignated Donation Fund is allocated under the direction of the Burlington Housing Authority Director of Resident Services. In 2014, approximately 200 individuals were served by this fund.$2,186-
