Cafe au Play is a community center / coffeehouse designed to meet the needs of diverse families for a comfortable accessible space that encourages social interaction, genuine and sustainable support, creative stimulation, and community inclusion. Cafe au Play provides family support, educational, health, and creative arts programs for adults and children. Cafe au Play's secondary purpose is to offer high school and college-aged students the opportunity to learn job skills and connect with staff mentors, families and the larger community by participating in our Barista Training Program.

This interactive show features singing, dancing and musical instruments and encourages audience participation! - Dancing With No Shoes On with Chuck Cheesman Chuck Cheesman makes music for children and with children, and he thinks it is probably the best job on the planet. Sometimes parents come to him and say, Mr. Chuck, I cant sing. He simply replies, Cookie Monster and Bob Dylan have had hit records. You can sing. Everybody can sing! You dont even need to remove your shoes to join in the fun! - Micah and Me provide all the young childrens hit songs plus their own originals like Dump Truck! Some parents have said: It is like stepping into their living room, the atmosphere is so relaxed. We love it! Other parents have said: It is a free form dance party for toddlers! Regardless of what anyone else says, come and find out for yourselves! Your youngster will be asking to come back again and again! - Story Time with Olive Rootbeer and Dingo Olive and Dingo celebrate the simplicity of reading and telling stories, interwoven with song and movement for all ages. Every storytime ends with balloons and everyones encouraged to be silly and social!- Musical Playdate with Tallulahs Daddy Fun and energetic acoustic music for kids age 1 to 7, Tallulahs Daddys show is part entertainment and part exploration and discovery. Tallulahs Daddy will play his guitar, bass, cajun and other percussion instruments, and after the show, kids will be able to play them as well! - My Grownup and Me Playdate facilitated by Susan Lehman, CPDT (Certified Positive Discipline Trainer). Do fun connecting activities in Circle Time with your child and learn age appropriate discipline tools that invite cooperation and support your childs development, autonomy, and self-confidence. Each class will cover a new tool or concept such as Ages & Stages, Temperament, Big Feelings, and the Brain & Timeout.- Baby Time with Jeanie Diaz & Baby Myra Join Jeanie & Baby Myra and other new parents and their babies (ages 0-12 months) for an informal weekly gathering with songs, rhymes, and fun! This is an educational workshop for new fathers focused on giving dads the most current information on fatherhood, and connecting dads with resources and other dads. This workshop occurs the first Sunday of every month. - Spanish Storytime Join Portland Early Learning Project for a lively and interactive SPANISH STORY & PLAYTIME! Get ready to shake some maracas with Jessica. Books, songs, and lots of movement make this event **FUN** and **ENGAGING **for the whole family! Spanish Storytime occurs every other month.- Kids! Love Letters For Seniors at Cafe au Play - Create greeting cards to be given to seniors who receive Meals On Wheels through local Meals On Wheels centers. We'll use markers, construction paper, glue, stickers, and other fun craft items to create cards that will brighten a seniors day! We will have some pre-made cards for the very young kids to color in if they aren't ready to make cards from scratch. Supplies will be provided and art project is facilitated by Hands On Greater Portland staff. Love Letters for Seniors occurs once a month at Cafe au Play. - Healthy Boundaries Lecture Series Portland Waldorf School presents Healthy Boundaries, a two-part lecture series for parents with early childhood educator Michelle Yorn. | Cafe au Play's Barista Job Skills Training ProgramCafe au Play's Barista Training Program provides job skills training for high school and college-aged students. This free apprenticeship provides job skills training and resume-building experience for high school and college-aged students to help them break into the cafe and restaurant industries. Participants receive free training while contributing to Cafe au Play. In addition to learning the hands-on skills associated with barista and cafe work, such as knife use and milk steaming, barista training students dedicate time on every shift to set personal goals. Cafe au Play staff teach the essential concepts that are important to all employers such as taking initiative, problem-solving, strong work ethic, efficiency, and customer service. To participate in this program, students must commit to working 2 three-hour training shifts/week for six months.Introductory Barista Training Program:This is the first 150 hours of training. These hours can be completed over the duration of 6 months to 6 weeks depending on the length and frequency of trainings. Participants will be taught the basics of making orders, learn about espresso and milk steaming, and build fundamental skills such as customer service and efficiency. They also learn how to master caf work flow and develop basic food service and barista skills. Upon completion of our Introductory Program, students may decide, with the consent of staff, to move onto our Advanced Program.Advanced Barista Training Program:This part of the program is an additional 150 hours of training and requires a minimum of 2 three-hour shifts per week. Students are encouraged to take on longer shifts to experience a more typical caf work shift. Participants will be taught more advanced skills such as baking, mentoring and shift management. They will also have the opportunity to get involved with Night Grounds Coffeehouse (our student-run caf) and master the skills they learned in our Introductory Program.Caf au Plays Barista Training Program gives students the opportunity to develop marketable job skills and learn how to work in the caf industry. Students are offered the invaluable experience of working alongside staff mentors in a fully functioning caf and community hub.
