| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| Proyecto Itzaes' main program (also the largest) focuses on literacy and access to education. the largest expenses are books, other educational materials, didactic toys, computers and other technology as well as mentored learning in small groups. This also includes the book exchange program, computer loans for students, bus fare stipends for university level students and printing/photo copy costs for students who cannot afford to purchase text books. Approximately 3000 students in four main villages (Ixil, Chicxulub Pueblo, Hacienda Too and Dzemul) as well as weekly visits to six additional smaller and remote villages in 2020 | $0 | $24,500 |
| The second largest program focuses on preserving Maya culture at the same time as providing access to an increasingly global community. This is accomplished with Maya classes from preschool to adult, pre-hispanic music ( traditional Maya music with hand -made instruments, early childhood songs in Maya for pre-k to grade 5), Maya traditional dance classes, Maya ceremonies, Maya agricultural practices and more. In 2020 we focused increasingly on Maya agricultural practices, ceremonies and community as the direct result of several devastating floods and hurricanes that destroyed crops and wiped-out traditional stores of saved seed. Many ceremonies and dances were shared via cell phone videos due to COVID | $0 | $13,200 |
| The third largest and newest of Proyecto Itzaes programs is an increase in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities and includes small group classes in the above, science fairs and science projects, visits by STEM professionals who are also of Maya heritage and more. Since 2017, Proyecto Itzaes has organized an annual science fair in the village of Ixil that is visited by about 600 people during the one day event. In 2020, this event did not take place because of COVID. The STEM program serves approximately 3000 children and their families. In 2020 PI produced short STEM videos for students that could be viewed from their parents/relatives cell phones with homework responses delivered via cell as well | $0 | $1,290 |
