Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The lunchbox fund is a nonprofit organization that focuses on fostering education via nutrition by providing warm, nutritionally fortified meals daily to vulnerable, orphaned, and at-risk school children in townships and rural schools across south africa.

The lunchbox fund is a nonprofit organization focused on funding in-school nutrition programs to vulnerable, food-insecure, and at-risk school children in south africa. Our meals offer a behavioral incentive for children to attend school, and enable them to concentrate and learn while there. We work in township and rural areas across south africa, helping children get the education they desperately need to build a life free of poverty for themselves and their families.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The fund has been determined by the internal revenue service to be a section 501(c)(3) charitable organization exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(a) of the internal revenue code (irc). The fund has been classified as a publicly supported organization and not as a private foundation under section 509(a)(1) of the irc and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors. Management evaluated the fund's tax positions and concluded that the fund had taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance. With few exceptions, the fund is no longer subject to income tax examinations by u.s. Federal, state or local tax authorities for years before 2020, which is the standard statute of limitations look-back period.

IRS990ScheduleF/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THROUGH REGULAR REPORTS AND SITE VISITS, THE LUNCHBOX FUND-UNITED STATES (LBF-US) ASSESSES THE LUNCHBOX FUND-SOUTH AFRICA'S (LBF-SA) USE OF GRANT FUNDS TO ACHIEVE ITS PROGRAM PURPOSES. THE FOUNDER AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF LBF-US, MS. TOPAZ PAGE-GREEN, SERVES ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF LBF-SA AND VISITS PROGRAM SITES IN SOUTH AFRICA THREE TO FOUR TIMES A YEAR, AS WELL AS MAINTAINS CLOSE CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH LBF-SA STAFF AND LEADERSHIP. DURING HER VISITS, SHE PERSONALLY MONITORS AND EVALUATES THE USE OF GRANT FUNDS TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR CHILDREN AT PARTICIPATING SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOL SITES, EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTERS, EARLY LEARNING PLAYGROUPS AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. LBF-SA ALSO CLOSELY MONITORS THE SUCCESS AND INTEGRITY OF ITS FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM AND REPORTS TO LBF-US ON A CONSISTENT BASIS. LBF-SA HAS A MYRIAD OF STRUCTURES AND SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT FOOD IS BEING PROPERLY TRANSPORTED TO PARTICIPATING SITES, STORED, PREPARED, AND SERVED TO SOUTH AFRICAN CHILDREN. EACH EDUCATIONAL SITE THAT AGREES TO PARTICIPATE IN LBF-SA'S FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM ENTERS INTO A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU), WHEREBY THE SCHOOL COMMITS TO FOLLOWING LBF-SA'S RULES AND PARTICIPATING IN MONITORING VISITS. LBF-SA CONDUCTS UNANNOUNCED MONITORING VISITS OF EACH PARTICIPATING SITE TWICE A YEAR. DURING THE MONITORING VISITS, AN IN-DEPTH MONITORING FORM IS COMPLETED, PHOTOGRAPHS ARE TAKEN, AND THE AMOUNT OF FOOD IN STORAGE IS NOTED. ANY SITE THAT IS FOUND TO BE OUT OF COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROGRAM RULES IS GIVEN PROPER NOTICE, WITH ONE MONTH TO BECOME FULLY COMPLIANT. A FOLLOW-UP MONITORING VISIT IS CONDUCTED TO ASSESS WHETHER THE SITE HAS MADE NEEDED CHANGES TO BECOME COMPLIANT WITH PROGRAM RULES. IF PROGRAM RULES HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY MET, THEN THE SITE IS IMMEDIATELY EXCLUDED FROM THE NUTRITION PROGRAM AND FOOD DELIVERY TO THE SITE IS STOPPED. NEW MOUS ARE ENTERED INTO EVERY YEAR WITH COMPLIANT SITES.
IRS990ScheduleF/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE LUNCHBOX FUND-UNITED STATES' (LBF-US) FOUNDER AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, MS. TOPAZ PAGE-GREEN, MAKES TRIPS TO SOUTH AFRICA THREE TO FOUR TIMES A YEAR FOR THE PURPOSE OF MONITORING THE APPROPRIATE DISTRIBUTION AND USE OF LBF-US' GRANT FUNDS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROPER EVALUATION PROTOCOLS. MS. PAGE-GREEN ALSO IS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE LUNCHBOX FUND-SOUTH AFRICA (LBF-SA). TO INFORM LBF-SA'S STRATEGIC PLANNING EFFORTS, AND TO FOCUS GRANT-MAKING FOR LBF-US, MS. PAGE-GREEN MEETS WITH EDUCATORS, CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AT EDUCATIONAL SITES THROUGHOUT SOUTH AFRICA TO ASSESS IMPACT AND CONTINUED NEED.
