“Art education and events: four sessions of art education classes are offered throughout the year covering a wide range of artistic mediums and skill levels. Classes and events are available for all ages, including as young as 5 years old. Each sesssion of educational offerings features new offerings. In 2017 a total of 102 art education classes were offered, including ceramics & pottery instruction for youth and adults in our on site clay studio, digital photography, jewelry making, and seasonally themed multi or mixed media classes for kids to name a few. Our wacky wednesday program provided an opportunity for siblings to participate together in cross-disciplinary classes using art to explore themes of life science, astronomy, storytelling, architecture, and ecology. Overall 276 students from 13 cities and 2 states attended classes or workshops at the buchanan art center in 2017. 46% of students were adults and 54% youth. Other participatory art education/appreciation programs in 2017 included the following: valentines for veterans where community members of all generations are invited together to create valentines cards for service members with donated materials. Cards are sent to specific members or to nearby va hospital locations.; "empty bowls" pottery and soup supper project that raises funds for the local food pantry through free community pottery workshops and donation of studio time, materials, and finished pottery for the project.; raku walkthrough events held four times a year offer the community a low cost way to experience this dynamic pottery technique. Participants select and glaze a handmade piece ofpottery, observe the outdoor pit firing process, and quench the piece to reveal colors determined by the material and heat of the fire. Stop, lunch, listen, a youth art activity presented at the buchanan common in collaboration with the city of buchanan offering children a fun-filled hour of creating a variety of "make & take" activities with volunteer teachers; a two day pottery workshop by well known potter, eric botbyl; the art experience program was started towards the end of the year offering art experience and instruction to developmentally disabled individuals in an integrarted setting exploring techniques, colors, storytelling and art history. This program will continue into 2018 and culminate in a public reception in april for artwork created throughout the program. The bac art library was expanded by donations to around 1,000 books on art, including art theory, instruction, art history and the work of individual artists or museum collections. These books are available to the community for perusal and research while at the art center.”
“Gallery exhibits: in 2017 more than 1500 community members and neighbors attended more than 18 art exhibits hosted in three gallery spaces. These exhibits showcased artists from within 100 miles of buchanan and included a themed public entry show, area school art shows involving students from grades 5 to 12, and several group exhibitions along with those of individual artists. These exhibitions are available at no direct cost to artists who are interviewed by the buchanan art center gallery committee.
