Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To save the lives of homeless, unwanted, sick and injured cats and to work with our community to provide feline expertise and quality programs and services for people and cats.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Public service programs - subsidized spay and neuter program and cat food bankthe cat adoption team has continued to expand our services to families with cats who are in financial need. The two key programs offered currently are designed to reduce the cat overpopulation problem within our service area through spay and neuter and the other program is focused to keep the human animal bond by providing food and litter assistance to families in need. The subsidized spay and neuter program is open to the public four days a week, during which time our onsite veterinary hospital will perform up to 20 surgeries per day. In 2009 cat completed just over 600 subsidized surgeries, in 2011 that number grew to over 1,800. The increases has begun to show a direct impact on the percentage of cats and kittens who are saved through all local area shelters by more than 8% during that same time period. The second program, our cat food bank, was established in 2008 during the very beginning of the recession. That first year we handed out just over 3,000 pounds of food to families who were in need of help. In 2011, we handed out more than 37,000 pounds of food, helping on average 154 families and 480 cats each month. In december 2011, the cat food bank passed a milestone, by handing out our 100,000th lb. Of food. All of the food for this program is generated by individual donations of food.
Activity 3
Kitten foster program - in 2002 cat embarked on developing a kitten foster program which would not only enhance the quality of life of the kittens in our care, but increase the number of kittens adopted and saved who could not be safely housed in a shelter setting. Starting with just a handful of foster homes and very little structure, cat worked to create a program which provided not only the medical support to the kittens, but physical and emotional support to the foster families. Our goal was to create a program which would excite foster parents about coming back year after year. The kitten foster program is overseen by 1 1/4 fte, and those individuals support up to 150 foster homes and up to 250 kittens at any given point in time during the year. The structure of the program has enabled cat to have the long term success which was set out to achieve. Each foster parent who comes into the program is given the tools and support for success. From basic medical supplies and a procedure manual to walk them through what they may experience to having an assigned foster mentor (a volunteer who has years of foster experience and had training from our medical team) who can be there no matter the time of day or night to support them during any situation which may arise. By providing this support, cat has seen an increased retention rate of foster families and increased number of kittens being saved because of it. In 2011, cat adopted more than 680 kittens through our kitten foster program. In 2012, cat is anticipating more than 1,000 kittens to go through this critical program, and only increasing the number of kittens saved in the community.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0PUBLIC SERVICE PROGRAMS - SUBSIDIZED SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM AND CAT FOOD BANKTHE CAT ADOPTION TEAM HAS CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR SERVICES TO FAMILIES WITH CATS WHO ARE IN FINANCIAL NEED.

IRS990/Description0CAT'S MISSION IS TO WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY TO SAVE THE LIVES OF HOMELESS, SICK AND INJURED CATS AND KITTENS BY OFFERING SHELTER, ADOPTION, FOSTER, SPAY/NEUTER AND VETERINARY SERVICES TO END NEEDLESS FELINE EUTHANASIA. IN 2011 THE CAT ADOPTION TEAM CONTINUED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF CATS AND KITTENS SERVED THROUGH ADOPTION, SUBSIDIZED SPAY AND NEUTER SERVICES, AND A CAT FOOD BANK BY HELPING MORE THAN 10,000 CATS AND KITTENS IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE. CAT'S PRIMARY ROLE OF FINDING NEW HOMES FOR CATS AND KITTENS STILL REMAINS A STRONG FOCUS OF THE ORGANIZATION. IN 2011, CAT WAS ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY ADOPT 2,482 CATS AND KITTENS INTO THE COMMUNITY BY WORKING WITH SURROUNDING ANIMAL CONTROL FACILITIES, RESCUE GROUPS AND ASSISTING THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO INCREASE THE SAFETY NET CAT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO PROVIDE. THROUGH OUR ONSITE VETERINARY HOSPITAL CAT IS ABLE TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY MEDICAL TREATMENT TO REHABILITATE CATS WHO MAY OTHERWISE BE EUTHANIZED DUE TO THEIR ILLNESS OR CONDITION. FROM A RINGWORM TREATMENT ROOM, TO REPAIRING A DISLOCATED KNEE OUR HOSPITAL TEAM IS DEDICATED TO ENSURING EACH CAT GETS THE BEST CARE WE CAN POSSIBLY PROVIDE. ON ANY GIVEN DAY CAT HAS THE ABILITY TO CARE FOR UP TO 500 CATS AND KITTENS. CAT IS ABLE TO DO THIS BY HAVING AN EXTENSIVE KITTEN FOSTER PROGRAM AND 10 OFF-SITE ADOPTION CENTERS LOCATED AROUND THE PORTLAND METRO AREA. AT TIMES DURING THE YEAR CAT HAS MORE THAN 250 CATS AND KITTENS BEING CARED FOR OUTSIDE OF OUR FACILITY WHILE HAVING APPROXIMATELY 200 BEING CARED FOR AT OUR MAIN SHELTER IN SHERWOOD. CAT IS A PROUD PARTNER TO PARTNER AND NETWORK WITH OTHER COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS TO PROMOTED THE PUBLIC EDUCATION REGARDING RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP AND THE VALUES OF CATS IN FAMILIES. IN AN EFFORT TO EXPAND THE VALUABLE SERVICES CAT PROVIDES THE ORGANIZATION IS ALWAYS LOOKING TO DEVELOP NEW OR EXPAND EXISTING PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE INCREASED ADOPTIONS, DECREASE EUTHANASIA AND STRENGTHEN THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND WHILE ENRICHING THE LIVES OF CATS AND PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY.
