Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The great minds of tomorrow are in elementary schools everywhere, but science isnot. PS Science brings to elementary classrooms and program sites inspiring lessons that cultivate a deep understanding of the world and grow students and teachers who are confident and inspired by science.

P.S. Science, originally a program of Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation, Inc.(CCOF), which was formed as a separate 501 (c)(3) organization by Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in 2004 to share resources with undeserved schools in the greater Los Angeles community, absorbed the 501(c)(3) in June 2017 in order to focus all efforts on bringing rich STEM programs to under-served elementary schools.

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

Please see the accomplishments listed below for program services that were not listed on the prior return.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic all live activities were ceased during this fiscal year.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: NEW PROGRAM MODELDue to the pandemic, most of our in-classroom programming took place virtually during the 2020-21 school year. This included a mix of live instruction via Zoom and eventually through pre-recorded videos. At the onset of the pandemic, we focused efforts on producing lesson videos to accommodate distance learning. We soon realized the potential impact of adapting our program to be delivered virtually: pre-recorded video-lessons could allow us to expand access to our hands-on STEM curriculum, even after school re openings. As a result, we strategically focused efforts and resources on developing a video-based model of our program. We created 31 interactive, full-lesson videos for each grade level K-5 as well as lesson outlines with instructional guides and resource for each video. Video-lessons are guided by an interactive video featuring a PS Science Instructor teaching and guiding students through hands-on investigations. Like our original program model, this format provides classroom teachers with everything they need to easily and affordably teach high quality, inquiry-based science. Unlike our live instructor model, these can be delivered anytime, anywhere, and do not require a PS Science Instructor to physically be in a classroom.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0NEW PROGRAM MODELDue to the pandemic, most of our in-classroom programming took place virtually during the 2020-21 school year.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0OUT OF SCHOOLPS Science leveraged newly developed distance learning capabilities to create new, after-school learning opportunities for our partner communities. Our out-of-school program offerings included:18 after-school STEM clubs via Zoom 2 Introductory Code Clubs for 5th grade students and an Advanced Special Projects Coding Club, all via ZoomVirtual Family Science Nights, allowing parents and children to work together to run family-friendly science experiments from home after a short lessonIn-Person and Virtual Spring and Summer science camps In-Person Summer school STEM classesOur after-school clubs provided a space for STEM-enthusiastic K-5 students to conduct experiments and share about their findings. Club participants also heard from STEM-industry guest speakers who shared their own experiences with kids. During the reporting period, we also provided in-person programming. Starting in April, and continuing through the summer, we provided weekly STEM programs for kids at the Boys & Girls Club in Mar Vista Gardens and Santa Monica. During Summer we also provided science programming for kids attending summer care at dozens of LAUSD and YMCA locations. Finally, we taught in-person and virtual science lessons at ACES summer school and to summer camp attendees throughout June and July.
