Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The great minds of tomorrow are in elementary schools everywhere, but science isnot. PS Science brings to elementary classrooms and program sites inspiring lessons that cultivate a deep understanding of the world and grow students and teachers who are confident and inspired by science.

P.S. Science, originally a program of Crossroads Community Outreach Foundation, Inc.(CCOF), which was formed as a separate 501 (c)(3) organization by Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in 2004 to share resources with undeserved schools in the greater Los Angeles community, absorbed the 501(c)(3) in June 2017 in order to focus all efforts on bringing rich STEM programs to under-served elementary schools.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2: New Services

Science LessonsIn 2019-20, we added three new schools to the PS Science service partnership, bringing the total schools served to 10, the classrooms served to 80, and total number of students who received weekly STEM programming throughout the school year to 2,200. As a sign of the level of appreciation for the PS Science program, all schools are continuing with their PS Science partnership in 2020-21, and in schools where we were not already serving all classrooms, we have been asked to expand to serve additional classrooms. After school closures in March 2020, we modified our K-5 lesson plans to make them simpler to do with common things found at home and created a library of instructional videos which we sent to all our classroom teachers each week to support them in conducting lessons over Zoom with their students. The PS Science instructors continued to conduct lessons through Zoom with all classes that were able to do so. We continued our after school CodeClub and our summer S-Team Rangers camp remotely, delivering materials kits to participants and meeting remotely through Zoom. Beginning in September 2019,the PS Science program provided weekly, 90-minute engaging hands-on science lessons to over 2,200 students and 80 teachers in grades K through 5 throughout the school year. We delivered all lesson materials to our partner schools each week. From August 2019 February 2020, materials were delivered each week to our 80 participating classrooms. As a product of the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic at the PS Science Headquarters, our students and teachers (and moms, dads, baby sisters and grandparents, etc) experienced weekly science lessons in their homes. Each week, the PS Science Instructors modified our K-5 lesson plans to make them simpler todo with common things found at home, and created a library of instructional videos to help our young scientists in their investigations. We now have a full library of quality PS Science lessons and as a natural outgrowth, we created a PS Science YouTube channel and over the summer have been posting new science videos to it each week. Check it out and subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/user/PSScience. Its a great resource to stimulate STEM learning, and it is available to anyone for free! When schools closed this spring, the school Family Science Night events that had been scheduled seemed doomed. But with more creative thought, we were able to conceive of a Remote Family Science night featuring a video presentation of a friendly alien Ovo who needed help from our students to design a landing pod so he could visit earth. After an initial YouTube live presentation, students worked with their families to build and test egg drop landing pods. We held a follow-up Family Science Night presentation the following week to share the students videos of their landing pod designs with the community. It was an extremely fulfillingexperience to involve families in their children's science learning and we hope to recreate this Remote Family Science night program for more of our schools in the 2020-21 school year.PS Science now offers an after school Code Club for 4th and 5th grade students who are interested in exploring coding and programming. The club meets weekly after school throughout the school year. Participants receive a materials kit containing a micro:bit microprocessor and additional sensors and components. Most projects are based on the MakeCode website at https://makecode.microbit.org/ Students become skilled at creating code, programming sensors, testing and revising the output with lights, sounds, and other sensors. Projects will vary each semester, and have included battling robots, kinetic sculptures, robot dance contests, and more! This is an introductory club and no prior coding experience is necessary. There was one Club in this fiscal year that served 30 students.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3: Ceased Conducting or Significant Changes To Services

Ceased:During the 2018-19 year, PS Science partnered with P.S. Arts to deliver a STEAM Science & Dance program titled Science With a Twist to five classrooms in the Inglewood School District. Six classroom teachers and 150 students participated in the immersive twelve week program, receiving 90 minutes of science and 60 minutes of dance each week. The dance lessons were themed to support the concepts being learned during the science lessons. At the culmination of the program, students choreographed and performed dance routines that embodied the concepts they had learned in Science. A professional evaluation done of the program showed the students had high content retention and engagement.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Code ClubPS Science now offers an after school Code Club for 4th and 5th grade students who are interested in exploring coding and programming. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0S-Team Rangers Summer Science CampWe are pleased to report that our 5th annual S-TEAM Rangers Summer Science camp for our oldest PS Science students wasrun through Zoom in June 2020. Camp materials bags were assembled and delivered to all participants, high school mentor/coaches recruited, and the remote two-week camp was an incredible success with a great blend of STEM activities including dissections, coding with micro:bits, creative product design, electronics, magnetism and more! The forty students who participated gave the camp the highest rating and continued Zoom meetings on their own twice weekly throughout the summer to further their new friendships and STEM interests.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Code ClubPS Science now offers an after school Code Club for 4th and 5th grade students who are interested in exploring coding and programming.
