“In partnership with the high point nc ploice department, we continued our successful community oriented crime reduction strategy. This involves focused deterrence policing. We provided individual assistance to ex- offenders which were referred by the high point violent crimes task force. The goal is to re-establishing them as productive citizens. We provided counseling, a 24 hour crisis line, living expenses, job training and help securing employment. We provide special emphasis on certain types of violence such as: repeat violent offenders, drug mark offenders, gang offenders, domestic violence offenders. 97% of the offenders we helped were in the repeat violent crime offender category. One of the programs offered to ex-offenders is the life construction program. This is an 8 week cource that encourages constructive rather than deconstructive use of the mind and hands. Participants are required to commit to timely course attendance. They receive instruction on using construction equipment in order to complete a shed which will be used somewhere in the community. Skills involved include measuring and cutting materials. Upon successful course completion, participants are awarded a certificate of acheivement from the nc home buildeers association. 84% of ex-offenders that complete this course do not have violent crime re- offense. We helped several domestic violence victims navigate their way to obtaining help. We provided transportation to a woman to get her children from teh state of florida. A new program we started to address gang violence is called gloves up, guns down. It is softball pickup games each sunday during the summer. We have different speakers come and we feed the players and their family. 341 youth participated (122 were 18 years old or older). The violent crime rate in high point nc is 17% lower than the previous year.”
