“-in partnership with the high point, nc police department, hpcav continued to be successful in our community oriented crime reduction strategy involving focused deterrence policing. Hpcav provided individual assistance to ex-offenders referred by the high point violent crimes task force with the goal of re-establishing them as productive citizens. Services provided include counseling, a 24 hour crisis line, with living expenses, job training and help in securing employment. -special emphasis such as certain types of violence are catagorized through hpcav as follows: repeat violent crimes offenders, drug mark offenders, gang offenders, and domestic violence offenders. Most of the offenders in this program (97%)fall into the repeat violent crime offender catagory. -one of the programs offered to ex-offenders is the life construction program, which is an 8-week course that encourages contstructive rather than destructive use of mind and hands. Participants are required to commit to timely course attendance and receive instruction on using construction equipment, measuring and cutting materials in order to complete a building project (shed) that will be used somewhere in the community. Upon successful course completion, participants are awarded a certificate of acheivement from the nc home builders association. 84% of ex-offenders that complete this course do not have violent crime re- offense. -hpcav continues to work the domestic violence area of the strategy. This year we have helped several domestic violence victims navigate their way form help. We provided transportation to a woman to get her children from the state of florida. The children's father threatened to kill the mother. We were able to get her and the children a safe house in the triad. We have had several other victims come to the office for help and we have helped them with assistance of the family justice center and family services of the piedmont. We continue to attend first appearance hearings to advise the court that the offender is a threat to the victim or the community with hopes to secure a "no bond".”
“-a new program to address violent crime and gang violence is "gloves up, guns down" softball pickup games during the summer of 2023. Vulnerable youth are at risk for joining gangs, so hpcav held pickup softball games at washington terrace park in high point, nc every sunday of the summer. We had different speakers come to speak with the youth and we fed them and their family each sunday. We had 341 youth throughout the summer with 122 being 18 years old or older and 219 that were 17 years old or younger. The violent crime rate in high point is 17% lower that this time in the year 2022.”
