Mission and Program Overview

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Consistent with our objectives of music education, music education advocacy and music performance, the Pacific Crest Sinfonietta has continued to focus on providing opportunities for Portland Oregon's metropolitan area youth. In an environment where only a few of Portland's public schools offer music coursework, the Sinfonietta seeks to help fill the gap for this important art form. The Sinfonietta has continued to offer the American Music Program Jazz Orchestra as a conduit for advanced jazz education and performance of America's original art music. The program consists of approximately 18 middle and high school students. The program's Grammy award winning director endeavors to provide music education which trains youth in the real world of music performance, and to blurring the divisions between jazz, blues, classical, and other musics. The AMP is a nationally recognized music education program whose students go on to attend top college music schools and to become successful professional musicians. The program continues to offer coaching and collaborative opportunities to other band directors in the geographic area.Significantly, the Sinfonietta formed an alliance with King School, a grade k-8 school in a disadvantaged area of N/NE Portland, to begin bringing music education back to that school. To that end, the AMP program moved its rehearsals to King School, performed at school events, and during the fall of 2013 the Sinfonietta entered into a small contract with the school district to provide after school lessons to King students.Students participating in the American Music Program (AMP) performed in a variety of community music venues throughout 2013:During early January, the AMP youth jazz orchestra traveled to perform a the Jazz Education Network conference in Atlanta Georgia.Later in January, the Orchestra was again showcased at the Clark College Jazz Festival, playing to an auditorium of about 350 persons. Also in late January, the AMP students performed with bands from several public schools in a community concert held at Portland's Cleveland High School with about 250 persons in attendance.During February 2013, the AMP student orchestra also performed at Portland State University as part of the student component of the Portland Jazz Festival.February was an exciting month for the AMP students and the organization, as Esperanza Spalding's Radio Music Society CD, which was released in 2012, won a Grammy award for the song, City of Roses, which was co-arranged by the AMP director and included AMP musicians on the recording. The CD itself, which included students on several cuts, won a Grammy, and the video, which also featured AMP students, was nominated for a Grammy. Also in February, Oregon Public Broadcasting premiered its Art Beat segment entitled Masters of Jazz, the Next Generation, which featured past students of the AMP director and also significant footage of current AMP students in classroom and concert. In April, the jazz orchestra students competed in the conglomerate band category at the Next Generation Festival in Monterey California, performing before approximately 300 persons. They came in second in their category. There, students had opportunities to sharpen their musical skills, meet college music educators and audition for summer college workshops. Later in April, the band participated in a benefit concert at the Alberta Rose Theater to an audience of about 250 persons.During May, the band traveled by invitation to participate as finalists in the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition in New York City where they won several individual awards. In late May, the AMP jazz orchestra performed for two King School events, the King School PTA fund-raising event before approximately 250 individuals from the community and the King School assembly before students and staff. In early August, the youth jazz orchestra was hired to play at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival in Gresham, before an audience of approximately 150.Also in August the AMP group held their major fund-raiser. Fund-raising provides for travel monies, musical arrangements, tuition scholarships and other costs. AMP students, playing with local professional musicians, program alumni and guest artist Esperanza Spalding, put on an evening concert of jazz and blues offerings to a house of 600 persons. At the end of August, the AMP student orchestra participated in the student performance evening of the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival.During October, thanks to a grant to the Sinfonietta from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the AMP student jazz orchestra was able to perform in concert at Lewis and Clark College. They opened a tribute for the legendary African drummer Obo Addy, playing orchestrations of his music and of original music penned by the AMP director, Thara Memory.During December, a student combo of the AMP orchestra played for the King School open house. The fall of 2013 marked the beginning of a new after school program with a small number of King elementary students receiving instruments and music lessons by way of a small contract between Portland Public Schools and the Pacific Crest Sinfonietta. A component of this effort is for AMP students to act as music mentors for the King students. Also in December, the Sinfonietta and King School staff applied to the Oregon Community Foundation for a multi year grant to truly provide for an active music education program at King School. If funded, the Pacific Crest Sinfonietta would be the lead organization for the grant. The Sinfonietta plans to continue its successful jazz orchestra program and to work to develop additional school and community relationships and education projects during the coming year.$72,971-
