IRS990/Description0Current Role in the Community Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP) operates a sterilization clinic in Kaufman County, Texas, just east of Dallas. As the only high volume spay/neuter clinic in the region, we provide transport mobile animal spay hospitals and spay/neuter services at out fixed site clinic for pet owners in a 13-county area. Our target audiences are the owned pets that are not getting sterilized because of their owners financial status or lack of transportation services to a low-cost clinic. Half of the area we serve is rural and poor; the other half is urban (East Dallas) and poor. As a result, most residents in these communities havent gotten the necessary spay/neuter surgeries for their dogs and cats because of financial considerations. More than 90% of the animals that come to our clinic have never been to a vet before and 60% of the females have had at least two litters of puppies. We provide additional financial assistance to those that can not afford these crucial surgeries at our already reduced rates. About seventy percent of the pets sterilized at KCAAP come in on the Critter Cruiser (our regional transport van) from residents in our partnering communities. Our partners coordinate efforts with pet owners in their community, ensuring these animals receive the necessary surgery to prevent unwanted births. Their commitment and success in this endeavor is what has lead us to add the second transport vehicle and expand our clinic to provide more spay/neuter and vaccination services for pets in these communities. In 2011, KCAAP began setting up a MASH (Mobile Animal Spay Hospital) unit through out the poorest parts of Dallas.In August of 2009, KCAAP opened a centrally located regional, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter fixed-site clinic located in Crandall, Texas, with a transport service. This set-up allowed us to spay/neuter more pets, servicing more areas that needed us. The clinic operated two days a week, providing 70 surgeries per week. At the time, we projected by the end of year four, the clinic would be open two days per week, 48 weeks of the year, and performing nearly 6,000 surgeries annually. However, within seven months, we had hired a full-time vet and were performing nearly 120 surgeries per week because of the overwhelming need for these services. We are now performing well over 200 surgeries per week totally 10,000 surgeries in 2011. Through this process, we built partnerships with surrounding city and county shelters and humane organizations, offering transportation services to and from the clinic for the general public. These organizations remain the back bone of our program. Our partnering agencies are responsible for all aspects of their territory from advertising, promotions, funding and finding volunteers to perform check-in at their pick-up sites. For providing these services the partner agency receives a discounted spay/neuter price on rescue animals. A strong collaborative effort with these groups has helped us exceed our initial spay/neuter goals and stretched our resources enough that we have had to grow our program once again to meet the increased demand for services.More information on Federal Supplemental Information.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation4Client Note 1 - Statement 2 (continued)Form 990, Part III, Line aStatement of Program Service AccomplishmentsKCAAP continues to make tremendous progress since the inception of our SAVE Campaign:* Sterilization - Our low-cost spay/neuter program has sterilized more than 55,000 animals since its inception in June 2004, and we have performed more than 27,000 free surgeries for needy Texas residents. The Critter Cruiser, our transport van, has allowed us to expand our services to the following areas: Van Zandt County (one pick up per month, 30 animals per trip), City of Mesquite residents (one pick up per month, 30 animals per trip), City of Garland residents (one pick up per month, 30 animals per trip), Ellis County (two pick ups per month, 60 animals per month), City of Wylie (one pickup per month, 30 animals per trip), City of Grand Prairie (one pick up per month, 30 animals per trip), and City of Irving (two pick ups per month, 30 animals per trip). Our MASH units set up weekly in urban areas.* Adoption - We have increased awareness of our local shelters and humane organizations, and stressed the importance of adopting locally. We have performed over 1000 heartworm treatments at cost for rescue groups and shelters, saving them tens of thousands of dollars in medical care and allowed them to save animals that might otherwise have been killed. We attend regional adoption events to perform vaccination and microchip clinics as fundraisers for our partnering agencies. Raising thousands of dollars for medical care. We offer free or discounted surgeries to those that adopt from local shelters. * Vaccination - We have increased the awareness of the need for annual pet vaccinations. While traveling to our different service areas, KCCAP has given more than 100,000 vaccinations since June 2004.* Education - KCAAP together with our partnering agencies have educated over 200,000 Northeast Texas residents about responsible pet ownership, being safe around animals, and local animal control ordinances. We work with animal control officers to help them educate their citizens on local laws, and to identify citizens who need financial assistance with the cost of vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries. We regularly make regional appearances, attending county and city council meetings to educate local politicians on new programs, such as feral Trap/Neuter/Release and updates on State of Texas cruelty laws. We also provide them with local rabies statistics and shelter information provided to us by the Texas Zoonosis division.
