Mission

Through immersive experiences, we enrich life today by connecting people with history, art, and nature.

The genesee country museum was chartered in 1966 for the purpose of preserving and interpreting the cultural, social, architectural, horticultural and natural history of western new york and the genesee valley region for the education and enjoyment of the public. The museum opened its doors to the public in may 1976. The museum includes a collection of historic buildings, a nature center and an art gallery.

Form 990 is reviewed by the audit committee. The form is also provided to the board of trustees for review and comment prior to being filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Trustees and officers are required to complete an annual conflict of interest disclosure. In addition a trustee or officer shall disclose a conflict of interest: (a) prior to voting on or otherwise discharging his/her duties with respect to any matter to come before the board of any committee; (b) prior to entering into any contract or transaction involving the corporation; and (c) as soon as possible after the trustee or officer shall learn of a conflict of interest in any other context. Disclosure of the material facts surrounding the trustee or officer's conflict of interest shall be made to the secretary of the board of trustees or, in the case of a committee, the chairman of that committee (who shall then notify the secretary) and the secretary or committee chairman shall inform the other members of the board or committee prior to any action thereon.

Ceo compensation is determined by considering industry standards and the unique aspects of the museum, along with budget constraints. When the amount is determined, it is voted on and approved by the finance committee as part of the annual budget. Additionally, ceo compensation and performance are specifically reviewed by the executive committee as needed or at least annually.

The museum has a written policy in accordance with the wetland easement agreement.

PART II, LINE 9:

The museum includes the land under conservation easement with land, buildings, and equipment, net on the statement of financial position. Gain on land easement is included on the statement of activities and change in net assets as other income. There was no gain on land easement during the year ended december 31, 2019.

PART III, LINE 4:

The museum includes a collection of historic buildings, and an art gallery which serve to preserve the cultural, social, and architectural history of western new york and the genesee valley region for the education and enjoyment of the public.

PART V, LINE 4:

The museum has adopted investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding for programs supported by these investments while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of those assets. These policies are applied to donor-restricted amounts as well as to amounts designated by the board as quasi-endowments.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

THIS UNIQUE LIVING HISTORY EXPERIENCE PROVIDES MEANINGFUL INSIGHTS INTO THE ORIGINS OF CUSTOMS, TRADITIONS, SOCIAL VALUES AND THE EVOLUTION OF OUR CONTEMPORARY LIFESTYLES.THE MUSEUM IS THE LARGEST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM IN NEW YORK STATE AND MAINTAINS THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN AMERICA. THE 500 ACRE COMPLEX CONSISTS OF 68 HISTORIC STRUCTURES FURNISHED WITH 15,000 ARTIFACTS TO PROVIDE AN AUTHENTIC 19TH-CENTURY ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH VISITORS CAN INTERACT WITH KNOWLEDGEABLE, THIRD-PERSON HISTORIC INTERPRETERS IN PERIOD-APPROPRIATE DRESS. AMONG THE BUILDINGS PRESERVED IN THE HISTORIC VILLAGE ARE COLONEL NATHANIAL ROCHESTER'S HOUSE AND GEORGE EASTMAN'S CHILDHOOD HOME. WE CONSIDER EACH OF THE HISTORIC BUILDINGS, HISTORIC GARDENS AND FARM LANDSCAPES (INCLUDING DOMESTIC ANIMAL ENCLOSURES) AN EXHIBIT IN AND OF ITSELF. TRADE, CRAFT, COOKING AND AGRICULTURAL DEMONSTRATIONS OCCUR EVERY DAY. WHEREVER POSSIBLE, WE STRIVE TO PROVIDE SOME OPPORTUNITY FOR VISITORS TO TOUCH, USE, SMELL OR OTHERWISE SHARE THE EXPERIENCE.THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SERVED APPROXIMATELY 23,000 STUDENTS AND CHAPERONES DURING 2019 AND INCLUDED HISTORIC AND NATURE-THEMED TOURS, CLASSES AND DAY CAMPS FOR CHILDREN AGES 4-16; ADULT CLASSES; AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS, FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN AND OTHER GROUPS, OUR MOVEABLE MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OFFER EDUCATION OFF-SITE AND SERVED APPROXIMATELY 3,900 INDIVIDUALS DURING 2019. THE JOHN L. WEHLE GALLERY WAS COMPLETELY RENOVATED IN 2012 TO INCLUDE STATE OF THE ART STORAGE EQUPIMENT AND A GEOTHERMAL HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM. THE GALLERY NOW SHOWCASES SOME 3,300 RARE 19TH-CENTURY GARMENTS FROM THE SUSAN GREENE COSTUME COLLECTION AS WELL AS A WORLD-CLASS COLLECTION OF WILD LIFE AND SPORTING ART.
