Mission

Munson-williams-proctor arts institute is a fine arts center dedicated to serving diverse audiences by advancing the appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of the arts. The art institute aims to promote interest and participation in the arts and stimulate artistic self-expression and personal creativity. Mwpai continues to assume a leadership and advocacy role for the arts in utica, ny.

Major Activities

Activity 2
School of art - the scholl of art at mwpai is comprised of two divisions: the prattmwp college program and the community arts and dance program. The prattmwp program is an affiliate program with pratt institute in brooklyn, ny in which students pursuing a bachelor of fine arts degree spend their freshman and sophomore years at our utica campus, and then complete their degree by doing their junior and senior years at the pratt campus in brooklyn. The affiliation is in its twelfth year. In the 201213 academic year, prattmwp's enrollment consisted of 81 freshman and 73 sophomores full-time students. Of the approximately 154 students, 138 students are living in one of our three residential halls. Our incoming freshman class has students representing 15 states and 6 countries. Prattmwp recruits students nationally through national portfolio days in various cities and high school visits. International recruitment is handled though pratt institute's campus. The admissions office host numerous information sessions for interested students as well as two open houses. Overnight stays are also available to students who may want to experience a portion of campus living, attend a class, or participate in student activities.aside from interaction with their professors who are all practicing professionals in their field, students attend our easton pribble lecture series which invites contemporary practicing artists to speak about the careers as artists. The artists we select specialize in various disciplines and often do demonstrations or workshops for the students while they are on campus. All lectures are free and open to the public.the dance program presented the nutcracker in december and spring performance in may. Students were exposed throughout the year to visiting dance ensembles and professional dancers and choreographers as part of the educational offerings.the school of art gallery featured 12 exhibitions over the year. Highlights of the gallery schedule during the academic year are the annual faculty exhibit and annual alumni exhibit. The gallery also features exhibition of prominent practicing artists as an educational component of the curriculum. During the summer months, the gallery presents work by regional children's organizations and local high schools. The gallery also presents the congressional art show, an exhibition of juried work of high school students from the 24th congressional district. Representative richard hanna hosts a reception for the exhibit and personally distributes awards to students from to the 11 county district.
Activity 3
Performing arts - during the 2012-13 season, the performing arts division of the munson-williams proctor arts institute fulfilled its mission to provide a broad range of quality programs and educational opportunities in the performing and cinematic arts. The division presented 18 live performances across four different series, with a total attendance of 8,127. Educational programs attached to these performances included pre-concert talks and meet-the-artist receptions that reached an additional 441 participants. The weekly film series featured 54 titles for a total of 214 individual screenings, with an overall attendance of 16,099. The total participation for all performing arts events was 24,667. Highlights from the season include; performances by the midtown men and the chieftains, and a popular series of piano concerts by jeffrey siegel. Family-favorite entertainers included the lightwire theatre co., justin roberts and the gizmo guys. Intimate jazz concerts were presented by joe sample and hilary kole, among others.
