Mission

The fishkill elementary pta's mission, in common with that of the national pta and new york state pta, is: a. To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship. B. To raise the standards of home life. C. To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. D. To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teacher may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth. E. To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.

ARTS IN EDUCATION PROGRAMS 2015-16 ALL SCHOOL AND GRADE LEVEL ASSEMBLIES THAT PROMOTE THE EXPLORATION OF ARTS AND SCIENCE THROUGH INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES, ENHANCING THE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM. EXAMPLES INCLUDE LOCAL AND REGIONAL HISTORY PROGRAMS, CREATIVE ARTS, MUSIC AND THEATER PROGRAMS, HANDS-ON SCIENCE PROGRAMS, CHARACTER EDUCATION PRESENTATIONS AND HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS. MAKE A GOOD CHOICE PRESENTED BY LOU DEL BIANCO ALL GRADES THROUGH ORIGINAL SONGS, STORIES AND AUDIENCE INTERACTION, LOU DEL BIANCO TAKES HIS AUDIENCE ON AN EXCITING JOURNEY BACK THROUGH HIS CHILDHOOD SHARING THE DAILY JOYS, DREAMS AND BLUNDERS THAT TODAYS KIDS CAN RELATE TO, LAUGH AT, AND UNDERSTAND. CHILDREN WILL GET THE CHANCE TO DECIDE WHAT KINDS OF CHOICES THEY WOULD MAKE IF THEY WERE IN LOUS SHOES AND HOW THOSE CHOICES REFLECT ON THEIR OWN LIVES. THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY IS STRUNG TOGETHER WITH A COOL RAP TUNE THAT TELLS STUDENTS TO MAKE A GOOD CHOICE YOUNG AUTHORS DAY BY MOBILE ED PRODUCTIONS GRADES 3, 4, SC YOUNG AUTHORS DAY IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT AND ENHANCE THE CREATIVE WRITING CURRICULUM. THIS REWARDING DAY BEGINS WITH AN ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY BY A CLASSICALLY TRAINED MIME ARTIST INTRODUCING STUDENTS TO THE "ART OF SILENCE" - MIME. DURING THE PROGRAM THE PERFORMER DISCUSSES THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WRITING FOR THE STAGE AND WRITING FOR THE PAGE. HE STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF STRUCTURE AND HE TELLS THE STUDENTS WHERE HE GOT HIS INSPIRATION FOR HIS STORIES. AFTERWARDS, THE STUDENTS RETURN TO THEIR CLASSROOMS TO WRITE STORIES FOR THE PERFORMER. DURING THE WRITING PROCESS THE PERFORMER STOPS IN CLASSROOMS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS AND HELP WITH THE WRITING. THE DAY CULMINATES WITH AN AFTERNOON ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE STUDENTS ARE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR FINE WORK AS SELECTED STORIES ARE ACTED OUT BY THE PERFORMER. YOUNG AUTHORS DAY IS AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE DESIGNED TO STIMULATE THE IMAGINATION. HIP HOP DANCE RESIDENCY BY NY DANCE RESIDENCY (EDWIN FION)GRADE 6 STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK, INDIVIDUAL EXPRESSION, FOCUSED ATTENTION, APPLIED DIRECTION AND DISCIPLINE. THEY EXPLORE THESE SKILLS THROUGH COORDINATION CHALLENGES, HIGH-ENERGY AND FUN-FILLED EXERCISES AS THEY CELEBRATE THEIR INDIVIDUALITY IN A SETTING THAT ALLOWS CREATIVE FLOW AND JOY. THIS PROGRAM POSITIVELY IMPACTS THE WAY STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT HISTORY, MUSIC, MOVEMENT, TEAMWORK AND DISCIPLINE BY GIVING THEM A VISCERAL EXPERIENCE TO PAIR WITH THE INFORMATION BEING TAUGHT. STUDENTS WILL CHOREOGRAPH THEIR OWN HIP HOP DANCE AND PRESENT THEIR WORK. STUDENTS WILL ANALYZE AND CRITIQUE WORK COLLECTIVELY. AS STUDENTS SEE AND TOUCH A 5 FOOT STURGEON PUPPET, LISTEN TO TRAIN SOUNDS, TASTE SALT, TOUCH SEA STARS AND SMELL FISH, STUDENTS ARE USING WORKS OF VISUAL ART, IMPROVISATION AND SONG TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN PARTICIPATION IN THE ARTS WHILE MAKING DIRECT CONNECTIONS TO CURRICULUM TOPICS TAUGHT IN THE CLASSROOM. LEARNING TAKES PLACE BY THE STUDENT ACTUALLY CARRYING OUT A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, RATHER THAN LISTENING OR MERELY WATCHING A DEMONSTRATION. PATRIOT AND LOYALISTS PRESENTED BY BOSCOBEL HOUSE & GARDENS GRADE 4 THIS SOCIAL STUDIES BASED PROGRAM TAKES STUDENTS BACK IN TIME TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND A REENACTMENT OF THE BATTLE OF SARATOGA. THE STAGE IS SET WITH REPRODUCED ARTIFACTS FROM THE TIME PERIOD. STUDENTS THEN GATHER AROUND A 14 X 4 MAP OF THE HUDSON VALLEY AND EXPERIENCE LOYALISTS AND PATRIOTS EFFORTS THAT LEAD TO THE PATRIOTS VICTORIOUS TURNING POINT IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITH MASTER STORYTELLER JONATHAN KRUKGRADES K-2 (WORKSHOPS FOR GRADE 1) CHILDREN WILL BE ENGAGED IN VARIED STORIES FROM EUROPE, ASIA, THE AMERICAS AND AFRICA, WITH AN INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE. THEY'LL LISTEN TO FIVE DIFFERENT STORIES. FIRST GRADERS, TO IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE STORY SEQUENCE AND ELEMENTS, WILL ALL REENACT THEIR FAVORITE STORY. THEY THEN WILL BE GUIDED TO DRAW THREE PICTURES SHOWING A NEW ANIMAL FOR ANANSI TO TRICK AS HE DOES IN "A STORY, A STORY." NATIVE AMERICAN VESSEL MAKING WITH CLIF MENDELSONGRADE 5 STUDENTS WILL BE CONSTRUCTING A VASE THAT WILL BE DECORATED WITH NATIVE AMERICAN DESIGNS, IMAGERY AND PATTERNS. THEY WILL EMPLOY 5 6 ADVANCED HAND BUILDING TECHNIQUES UNDER MY INSTRUCTIONS AND SUPERVISION. AS WITH MANY CULTURES, COIL CONTAINERS WERE USED AS STORYBOARDS TO RECORD OUR HISTORY. CLAY COIL CONTAINERS WERE WRITTEN ON WITH ARTWORK, VERY OLD ALPHABETS, AND DESIGNS THAT HAVE REVEALED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT HUMAN HISTORY. THESE POTS CAME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES. WHILE CONSTRUCTING THE COIL CONTAINERS STUDENTS ARE EMBARKING ON A PRACTICE THAT HAS BEEN SHARED BY MANY CULTURES FOR MANY PURPOSES. VASES ARE VERSATILE CONTAINERS THAT CAN BE USED FOR A VARIETY OF PURPOSES. THEY COME IN MANY SHAPES AND SIZES, SO AS YOU BUILD YOUR COILS, FIND A SHAPE THAT YOU LIKE AND BE CREATIVE. VISIT THE WEB PAGES TO IDENTIFY A SPECIFIC KIND OF DESIGN, AND THEN RECREATE THE STYLES AND PATTERNS. MAYBE YOUR DESIGNS WILL REVEAL SOMETHING ABOUT YOU TO YOUR CLASSMATES AS WELL AS TELL A STORY. CREATURES ALIVE UNDERWATER LEARNING ADVENTURES PRESENTED BY MOHONK PRESERVEGRADE 2 THROUGH A HANDS-ON INVESTIGATION WITH LOCAL AQUATIC LIFE, STUDENTS INTERACT WITH, IDENTIFY, CLASSIFY, AND OBSERVE HOW THESE CREATURES LIVE AND INFLUENCE THEIR UNDERWATER ENVIRONMENT. STUDENTS EXPLORE HOW CLEAN WATER PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN OUR ENVIRONMENT AND IN OUR HEALTH. ITS ALIVE HOW OUR ORGANS WORK PRESENTED BY PETRA PUPPETSGRADES 4-6 STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT ORGANS AND BODY SYSTEMS THROUGH PUPPETRY AND VENTRILOQUISM. THIS PROGRAM REINFORCES THE 4TH GRADE STUDY OF THE BODY, WHERE STUDENTS CREATED MODELS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND WROTE ABOUT THE ORGANS. FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS WILL USE WHAT THEY LEARN IN THE PROGRAM IN THEIR STUDY OF THE RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS, ULTIMATELY CREATING A MODEL OF THE LUNGS. THIS PROGRAM DIRECTLY ALIGNS TO AND ENGAGES STUDENTS IN THE SCIENCE 21 CURRICULUM FOR 4TH AND 5TH GRADES. WATER CYCLE GAME-INCREDIBLE JOURNEY PRESENTED BY LISA DIMARZO/IMPACT EDUCATION GRADE 3 STUDENTS USE THEIR BODY GO ACT OUT WATER AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE STATES OF MATTER. USING LITTLE ENERGY AND MOVING VERY LITTLE AS THEY PRETEND TO BE FROZEN SOLID AND USING A GREAT AMOUNT OF ENERGY AS THEY MOVE THEIR BODIES WILDLY AS THEY PRETEND TO BE WATER AS A GAS MOLECULE FLOATING THROUGH THE AIR. STUDENTS THEN PLAY AN INTERACTIVE GAME FOLLOWING THE PATH OF A MOLECULE OF WATER AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE WATER CYCLE. STUDENTS ALSO SING A SONG WHILE USING BODY MOVEMENTS TO ACT OUT THE WATER CYCLE USING SCIENCE VOCABULARY; EVAPORATION, CONDENSATION, PRECIPITATION, COLLECTION. USING COLORED BEADS AND A CHENILLE STEM, STUDENTS CREATE A STORY BOOKMARK OR BRACELET AS THEY TRAVEL AS A WATER MOLECULE. THEY COLLECT 16 BEADS AS THEY PLAY THE GAME AND HAVE CREATED A VERY UNIQUE STORY. THE BUTTERFLY GUY--RICK MIKULA GRADE 3 RICK'S PROGRAM WILL SHOW THE BEAUTY OF BUTTERFLIES. MOUNTED SPECIMENS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE MYSTERY OF CAMOUFLAGE AND THE TRICKERY OF DISGUISE THAT BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS USE TO ESCAPE PREDATORS. 'LIVE' BUTTERFLIES ARE ALWAYS THE HIGH POINT OF EVERY PRESENTATION AS RICK DEMONSTRATES JUST HOW EASILY THEY CAN BE HANDLED AND CARED FOR IN THE CLASSROOM. TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO RAISE BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS AT ANY TIME OF YEAR BY USING SIMPLE, RECYCLABLE, HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. THEY WILL EARN THE SECRETS OF BUTTERFLY GARDENS THAT WILL NOT ONLY ATTRACT THE FLYING JEWELS OF THE SKY, BUT ALSO CAUSE THEM TO LAY EGGS AND START A POPULATION RIGHT AT SCHOOL. Arts in education programs 2015-16 all school and grade level assemblies that promote the exploration of arts and science through interactive experiences, enhancing the classroom curriculum. The entire assembly is strung together with a cool rap tune that tells students to make a good choice young authors day by mobile ed productions grades 3, 4, sc young authors day is designed to support and enhance the creative writing curriculum. This rewarding day begins with an all school assembly by a classically trained mime artist introducing students to the "art of silence" - mime. During the program the performer discusses the differences between writing for the stage and writing for the page. He stresses the importance of structure and he tells the students where he got his inspiration for his stories. Afterwards, the students return to their classrooms to write stories for the performer. During the writing process the performer stops in classrooms to answer questions and help with the writing. The day culminates with an afternoon assembly in which the students are recognized for their fine work as selected stories are acted out by the performer. Young authors day is an educational experience designed to stimulate the imagination. Hip hop dance residency by ny dance residency (edwin fion)grade 6 students will learn the importance of teamwork, individual expression, focused attention, applied direction and discipline. They explore these skills through coordination challenges, high-energy and fun-filled exercises as they celebrate their individuality in a setting that allows creative flow and joy. This program positively impacts the way students learn about history, music, movement, teamwork and discipline by giving them a visceral experience to pair with the information being taught. Students will choreograph their own hip hop dance and present their work. Students will analyze and critique work collectively. See, touch, hear presented by lisa dimarzo/impact education kindergarten, sc students actively use each sense in this hudson river themed program. As students see and touch a 5 foot sturgeon puppet, listen to train sounds, taste salt, touch sea stars and smell fish, students are using works of visual art, improvisation and song to actively engage in participation in the arts while making direct connections to curriculum topics taught in the classroom. Learning takes place by the student actually carrying out a physical activity, rather than listening or merely watching a demonstration. Students then gather around a 14 x 4 map of the hudson valley and experience loyalists and patriots efforts that lead to the patriots victorious turning point in the american revolution. Banana splits: support for students who have experienced divorce or death of a parent. Dare/red ribbon: educates students to maintain a drug-free environment and make healthy choices. At the end of the school year, a local officer comes to the school to speak with the children and fifth graders participate in a dare graduation. Fifth grade moving up: celebration of our graduating fifth graders in june. Gardening: maintaining the gardens at the front of our school. Hugs committee: special events that increase self-esteem and promote character education. Mary mcardle award plaque: plaque and yearly award to honoe student who excels in citizenship. Parp (parents as reading partners): reading program that encourages parents and children to read together. The program is designed to promote the love of reading by asking parents and other family members at home to set aside fifteen minutes a day to read with their children.
