“Part VI, Section A, line 2 Board member Scott Snapper and highly compensated employee Kimberly Frederick-Snapper have a family relationship. Bylaws Changes Part VI, Section A, line 4 Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America amended its bylaws in calendar year 2015 to clarify which officers are empowered with signatory authority on contractual arrangements involving the organization. Process used to review form 990 Part VI, section B, Line 11 The Form 990 was prepared by a national accounting firm in conjunction with the organization's finance department. A copy of the draft form 990 was circulated and reviewed with the Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee members for discussion and comment. A copy of the 990 is distributed to all Board of Trustees prior to filing.”
“Part VI, Section B, Line 12 All officers, directors, trustees, and key employees of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Inc. ("CCFA") are required to annually disclose any conflicts of interest that arise by virtue of employment, board service, or position with CCFA. CCFA monitors compliance with its conflict of interest policy through an annual questionnaire/disclosure statement that is distributed to these individuals. Potential conflicts are investigated immediately.”
“Part VI, section B, Lines 15 a & b The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is dependent on experienced and qualified leadership to achieve its goals. Factors such as annual gross revenues, geographic locations, tenure, mission and individual performance help determine senior leadership compensation. The President's compensation is determined on an annual basis by the Chairman of the Board and Compensation and Benefits Committee using guidelines and comparable data provided in National Compensation Studies of Chief Staff Executives. In January 2015, The Foundation hired an independent compensation consultant to review and validate the compensation it pays its executives (and all employees, for that matter). The Foundation's practice will be to continue to rely on benchmarking surveys and other industry data comparing the compensation CCFA pays to its employees with compensation paid to employees of other not for profit organizations of similar size.”
“part vi, section C, line 19 The taxpayer makes its Form 990 available to the public by retaining a copy at its place of business and on its website at www.ccfa.org. The Form 990 is likewise published on the internet at www.guidestar.org. The organization's financial statements are posted on its website. Governing documents and conflict of interest policy will be provided upon request at management's discretion.”
“Part VIII, line 1g, Noncash contributions The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Inc. ("CCFA") has utilized the services of Car Program, Inc., an organization that receives donated vehicles, sells them and remits the net proceeds to several charitable organizations. The vehicles are not donated directly to CCFA nor does CCFA have ownership rights to them. In 2015, CCFA received $17,304 in revenues from this program. Additionally, CCFA receives considerable in-kind contributions in the form of donated public service announcements on television and radio statements and services received from physicians and health professionals that have made significant contributions of their time in furtherance of CCFA's mission. The fair value of such in-kind contributions is reflected in the statement of activities as contributed services and airtime revenue and health professional education and public information program service expense. Since donated services are not reported on the Form 990, CCFA has not reported the contributed services and airtime on Schedule M or Part VIII, line 1(G). For the year ending December 31, 2015, contributed services and airtime amounted to $11,734,725. Form 990, Part XI, Line 9 Other changes in net assets Changes in Charitable Remainder Trusts - $31,691”
“Part XI, Line 2d Changes in Charitable Remainder Trusts: $31,691 Part XI, Line 4b Reimbursements reclassed to Part VIII: $88,154 Reconciliation of Expenses Part XII, Line 4b Reimbursements reclassed to Part VIII: $88,154”
“Part X Accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement, provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can be recognized in the financial statements only if the position is "more-likely-than-not" to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. The Foundation is exempt from income tax under the Code, however, is subject to tax on income unrelated to its exempt purposes, unless that income is otherwise excluded under the Code. The tax years ending 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 are still open to audit for both federal and state purposes. The adoption of this guidance did not have an impact on the Foundation's financial statements as management believes that there are no material uncertain tax positions within its financial statements.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | RESEARCH - SINCE ITS INCEPTION, CCFA HAS BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF MEDICAL RESEARCH IN CROHN'S DISEASE AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS -COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD). THERE ARE Three MAIN RESEARCH CATEGORIES: basic research, clinical research and translational research. BASIC RESEARCH EXPLORES THE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF THE DISEASES. IT ANSWERS SUCH QUESTIONS AS: WHAT IS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF CROHN'S AND ulcerative COLITIS? WHICH GENES ARE INVOLVED IN THESE DISEASES? WHAT IMPACT DOES the gut microbiome have on the course of the disease? ALTHOUGH BASIC RESEARCH IS COMPLEX, it is important to recognize that THESE STUDIES WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO THE CURE FOR IBD. CLINICAL RESEARCH DETERMINES WHICH MEDICAL AND SURGICAL OPTIONS WORK BEST FOR PATIENTS. Translational research applies findings from basic science to enhance human health and well-being. It aims to translate findings in fundamental research into medical practice and meaningful health outcomes, producing new treatments that can be used clinically. -CCFA HAS PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN MANY MAJOR SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS IN IBD, FROM GENERATING DATA THAT LED TO NEW THERAPIES TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE FIRST GENE FOR CROHN'S. -CCFA INVESTS IN building a new generation of researchers: IT TAKES 10 YEARS TO "build" a full-fledged, senior investigator. TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MOST TALENTED RESEARCHERS ENTER AND REMAIN IN THE FIELD OF IBD, CCFA PROVIDES RESEARCH TRAINING AWARDS TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF INVESTIGATORS. MANY OF TODAY'S MOST PROMINENT RESEARCHERS RECEIVED TRAINING AWARDS FROM CCFA EARLY IN THEIR CAREERS. -CCFA HAS A SCIENTIFIC STRATEGIC RESEARCH PLAN, "challenges in IBD research" WHICH PROVIDES A ROADMAP FOR ALL OF CCFAS RESEARCH PROGRAMS. As technology and science advance, CCFA recruits top IBD thought leaders from around the world to identify the priorities and resources that are essential for moving research from laboratory bench to patient care. CCFA BRINGS THE FINEST MINDS IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY (BOTH BASIC AND CLINICAL) AT ITS ANNUAL CONFERENCES, ADVANCES IN IBD AND DIGESTIVE DISEASE WEEK TO UPDATE THE PLAN. -CCFA SUPPORTS INNOVATIVE AND ESSENTIAL RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF IBD. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1967, CCFA HAS FUNDED OVER 1,400 PROJECTS AND INVESTED $268 MILLION IN RESEARCH. |
