Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B

Our virtual and in-person programs offer year-round jewish culture, yiddish language, and social justice experiences and interactive educational presentations. In 2020, the workers circle responded quickly and creatively to the pandemic's challenges; after closing in-person programs in march 2020, we transitioned classes and events to virtual platforms and experienced increased enrollment. We continued to grow virtual offerings in 2021, and as a result, we brought yiddish language, culture, history, and cuisine to tens of thousands of people, who enjoyed our classes, cultural events, and trip to yiddishland. In addition, we launched the great schmooze which connected with senior members who were experiencing difficult social isolation during the pandemic with younger members to share and collect life stories.

Form 990, Part X, Line 12

The organization has a board-approved investment policy in place.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A, Program service accomplishments

Education: the workers circle provides students from 5-13 years old with an understanding of progressive jewish values, as well as an appreciation of jewish cultural history, yiddish language and heritage, and activist traditions through our network of supplementary schools. The workers circle youth stand up for justice program teaches and inspires thousands of teens through jewish activist traditions along with tools for effective social engagement. The workers circle college network provides students with virtual and in-person training, cultural engagement, and social justice opportunities. The workers circle offers the largest yiddish language program in the world, with a year-round virtual class offering. We connect with over 1,000students each year through live classes, and tens of thousands more through connected programs and presentations.

Form 990, Part III, Line 1 Mission Statement

The workers circle builds progressive jewish identity and community through jewish cultural engagement, yiddish language learning, multigenerational education, and social justice activism. We provide meaningful jewish experiences for children, teens, college students, adults, and seniors through engaging programs that are inspired by our rich jewish cultural heritage and activist traditions. Our programs include social justice organizing and activism around protecting the united states democracy, with a focus on voting rights and being a partner in the movement to end systemic racism; running the largest yiddish language program in the world; a network of supplementary schools, a teen social justice program; and a college student network. Our year-round programs include monthly activist gatherings and engagement opportunities; events educating and highlighting jewish heritage and culture; a weeklong immersive yiddish retreat, jewish holiday celebrations; and an annual jewish journey to eastern europe where we provide an immersive look into a thousand years of jewish life. The workers circle has carried on, energetically and creatively adapting programs and developing initiatives to advance our vision of a strong and engaged community to collectively build a better and more beautiful world.
