Pt VI, Line 15A

COMPENSATION POLICY

Pt VI, Line 15B

All compensation is paid directly by the trustees of columbia university in the city of new york ("columbia university"), an unrelated organization, as defined by the irs. The american assembly, an institution founded at the university in 1950 and an affiliate, reimburses columbia university for such compensation amounts.

Pt VI, Line 19

Documents are available for public inspection. Financial statements are mailed upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

Pt X, Line 2

The Assembly is a not-for-profit organization exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and has been designated as an organization which is not a private foundation. Management believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken and does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The Assembly's tax returns are generally subject to examination by taxing authorities for a period of three years from the date of filing.

Pt V, Line 4

Intended use of Organization's endowment funds. Endowment assets include those assets of donor-restricted funds that the Assembly must hold in perpetuity or for a donor-specified period(s) as well as board-designated funds. As an affiliate of the University, the Assembly participates in the University's Pooled Investment Fund, in accordance with the investment policies of the University, as approved by the Board of Trustees, the endowment assets are invested in a manner that is intended to produce performance which exceeds that of relevant indices for each asset class while assuming a moderate level of investment risk.

IRS990/Desc0THE OPEN SYLLABUS PROJECT AFTER TWO YEARS OF WORK, THE OPEN SYLLABUS PROJECT LAUNCHED THE FIRST VERSION OF ITS "SYLLABUS EXPLORER" TOOL IN LATE JANUARY 2016. THE EXPLORER PRESENTS THE FIRST TOP-DOWN VIEW OF THE US HIGHER ED CURRICULA, BASED ON THE FREQUENCY OF ASSIGNMENT OF INDIVIDUAL TEXTS ACROSS ONE MILLION UNIVERSITY CLASSES (IT ALSO PERMITS FILTERING BY FIELD, STATE, AND INSTITUTIONAL LOCATION). THE LAUNCH WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A SUNDAY MAGAZINE ESSAY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT FOR TEACHING AND CULTURAL DEBATES. STORIES ABOUT THE PROJECT OR ITS FINDINGS APPEARED IN THE WASHINGTON POST, TIME MAGAZINE, THE NEW REPUBLIC, NPR (TWICE), THE LA REVIEW OF BOOKS, THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION, DIE WELT, AND MANY OTHER MAJOR MEDIA SOURCES. DURING THIS PERIOD WE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THE AUDIENCES FOR THE WORK, WHICH RANGE FROM DIGITAL LIBRARIES (WE ARE WORKING WITH THE INTERNET ARCHIVE, THE DIGITAL PUBLIC LIBRARY OF AMERICA, AND THE HATHI TRUST), TO CURRICULAR POLICY AT THE STATE AND INSTITUTIONAL LEVELS, TO PUBLISHING, WHERE WE CAN PROVIDE NOVEL DEMAND METRICS. WE HAVE BEGUN TO DEVELOP AN INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE PROJECT, CALLED THE SYLLABUS COMMONS, AND ARE ENGAGED IN DISCUSSIONS WITH-AT PRESENT-EIGHT UNIVERSITIES FOR FORMAL INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIP AND SUPPORT. WEB TRAFFIC HAS BEEN HIGH AND VERY REVEALING: THE EXPLORER ATTRACTED 250,000 VISITS IN THE FIRST 2 MONTHS AND CURRENTLY RECEIVES AROUND 1000 PER DAY. INITIAL FUNDING FOR THE PROJECT CAME FROM THE SLOAN FOUNDATION. WE ARE CURRENTLY OPERATING UNDER A GRANT FROM THE ARCADIA FOUNDATION. OUR PRIMARY PARTNER ON THE PROJECT IS DAVID MCCLURE OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY LIBRARY'S LITERARY LAB. THE FOURTH GLOBAL CONGRESS ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND THE PUBLIC INTEREST AS IN PAST YEARS, THE ASSEMBLY PLAYED A LEADING ROLE IN ORGANIZING THE GLOBAL CONGRESS ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND THE PUBLIC INTEREST-THIS TIME IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AND THE CENTER FOR INTERNET AND SOCIETY IN DELHI. THIS YEAR'S EVENT BROUGHT 370 PARTICIPANTS TO DELHI FOR THREE DAYS OF MEETINGS ON THE REGULATORY FRAMEWORKS THAT SHAPE GLOBAL ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE GOODS, INCLUDING PHARMACEUTICALS, BOOKS, SOFTWARE, AND AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES. THE CONGRESS HAS BECOME AN INCUBATOR FOR LARGE-SCALE COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS IN THIS AREA, INCLUDING THE ASSEMBLY'S WORK ON MEDIA PIRACY AND ACCESS TO EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, AND UPCOMING WORK ON THE REGULATION OF LARGE MONOPOLY INTERMEDIARIES. THE EVENT WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY FUNDING FROM OSF AND THE CANADIAN IDRC (ITS TRADITIONAL SUPPORTERS) WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM THE FORD FOUNDATION AND VINCENT MO-THE NEW OWNER OF ARDEN HOUSE-WHO PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF CHINESE SCHOLARS AND PRACTITIONERS IN THE EVENT. PRELIMINARY PLANNING FOR A FIFTH GLOBAL CONGRESS WILL GET UNDERWAY SHORTLY WITH THE SELECTION OF A LOCATION AND HOST ORGANIZATION. GENEVA IS AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION BECAUSE OF THE TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION'S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA-A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE ORGANIZATION IN WHICH SOME OF OUR PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS WERE INSTRUMENTAL. CHINA-EITHER BEIJING OR POTENTIALLY GUANGZHOU-IS ANOTHER POSSIBILITY, BUILDING ON CHINESE ENTHUSIASM FOR THE DELHI EVENT. THE TAKEDOWN PROJECT WE LAUNCHED OUR REPORT ON INTERMEDIARY LIABILITY FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT (FUNDED BY GOOGLE AND THE SLOAN FOUNDATION IN 2013). THIS PROJECT FOCUSED ON BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE 'NOTICE AND TAKEDOWN' PROCESS THROUGH WHICH RIGHTSHOLDERS REQUEST THE REMOVAL OF ALLEGEDLY INFRINGING ONLINE CONTENT AND ON THE ACCOMPANYING SAFE HARBOR FOR ONLINE SERVICES WHO COMPLY WITH THE PROCESS. THIS PROCESS CONSTITUTES THE MAIN REGULATORY SYSTEM FOR ONLINE SPEECH IN THE INTERNET ERA, FIRST INTRODUCED IN THE 1998 DIGITAL MILLENNIUM COPYRIGHT ACT (AND SINCE ADAPTED AROUND THE WORLD). THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE WORK WAS THE SHIFT FROM A HUMAN-MEDIATED PROCESS OF NOTICE AND TAKEDOWN TO AN AUTOMATED ONE IN
