Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The Museum has several membership categories based on level of contribution.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The draft Form 990 is reviewed by the Executive Director as well as the Deputy Director of Finance and Administration. It is then sent to the Audit Committee for review. After all comments have been addressed, the 990 is made available to the Board of Trustees for their review before final submission.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The Deputy Director of Finance and Administration ensures that the conflict of interest policy statement from the trustees are completed annually. Any conflicts noted are discussed with senior leadership. In regards to staff, the Museum's personnel manual includes a conflict of interest policy statement and all staff are required to sign a statement acknowledging that they have read and understand all policies included in the manual.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The HR Director prepares a staff compensation spreadsheet, along with comparable salary data from other cultural organizations and presents it to the Compensation Committee on an annual basis. The information is reviewed and ultimately approved by this committee, which consists of several members of the organization's Board of Trustees.

The Museum's collection is comprised of approximately 30,000 objects related to Jewish religious and cultural history, including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, ethnographic material, archaeological artifacts, numismatics, ceremonial objects, and broadcast media materials. The collection is held for exhibition, education, and research and is administered and stored in accordance with formal collection management policy approved by the American Association of Museums. The Museum maintains a policy that requires the proceeds from the sale of collection objects (deaccessions) be used to acquire other items for the collection.

The Museum's endowment serves a variety of purposes including both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Museum to function as endowments. The endowment supports numerous educational programs, as well as exhibitions, several staff positions and general operating expenses.
