Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

Following the preparation of the 990 by the independent tax preparer, the return is sent to the controller for review. The controller reviews the return in detail with the director of the foundation. Once this review is complete, the controller and the foundation director present it to the foundation president and the nasw chief operating officer (coo) for review. Once reviewed by all parties, the draft copy is sent to all members of the board of directors. The board reviews the return, after which time the returns are filed with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

On an annual basis, members of the nasw foundation board of directors are required to review the foundation's conflict of interest policy and sign a document stating that they are in compliance with the policy. They are also responsible for recusing themselves from any board business that may conflict with their other interests, and are not allowed to act as paid consultants to the nasw foundation or any of its affiliates. The policy covers officers.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

NASW FOUNDATION MAKES ITS AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY, GOVERNING DOCUMENTS AND TAX RETURNS AVAILABLE, for the same period of disclosure as set forth in section 6104(d), AT ITS NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS AT 750 FIRST STREET, NE, SUITE 800, WASHINGTON, D.C. Upon written request, NASW FOUNDATION directs the individual to Guide Star website. If the individual does not have electronic access to the internet, NASW FOUNDATION will provide a copy.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

The foundation's endowment consists of two donor-restricted funds, the international Rhoda g. Sarnat award fund and the learning springboard endowment fund. The international Rhoda g. Sarnat award fund was established to provide a monetary prize to an individual, group, or organization that has significantly advanced the public image of professional social work. The learning springboard endowment fund was established for the purpose of generating earnings to support the position of a social worker in the San Francisco school district.

Part X, Line 2:

The Foundation is generally exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the Code). In addition, the Foundation qualifies for charitable contribution deductions and has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation. Income, which is not related to exempt purposes, less applicable deductions, is subject to federal and state corporate income taxes. The Foundation did not have any net unrelated business income for the year ended June 30, 2017. Management evaluated the Foundation's tax positions and concluded that the Foundation has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the financial statements to comply with the provisions of the guidance on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes.
