Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The birthright israel foundation ("the foundation") was incorporated on december 10, 1999. It was formed to support the education of members of the jewish community outside of israel about judaism, to strengthen the understanding of their heritage, and to foster stronger bonds between the jews of diaspora and the state of israel. In furtherance of these purposes, the foundation provides funding to enable individuals aged 18-26 to participate in an educational peer-group trip to israel. Additionally, educational programs have been developed to target participants who have returned from israel to enhance their israel experience and strengthen their bond with the jewish community both in north america and israel.

Our mission is to build our base of financial support to assure that the gift of a 10-day Birthright Israel educational trip is available to every Jewish young adult.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12

Each officer, director, trustee and key employee of the ORGANIZATION is required to annually disclose any conflicts of interest that arise by virtue of their employment, board service, or position with the ORGANIZATION. The ORGANIZATION monitors compliance with its conflict of interest policy through an annual questionnaire/disclosure statement that is distributed to these individuals. Potential conflicts are investigated immediately.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15

The compensation of the President and CEO, COO and CFO is reviewed annually by the independent members of the compensation committee of the board of directors who relied upon external 3rd party comparable market data in assessing the appropriateness of the total compensation to be provided to the incumbent. Compensation decisions and reports are contemporaneously documented in the minutes of the committee meeting at the time the decisions are made. For all other individuals reported on the Form 990, compensation decisions are reviewed internally by the Foundation's officers and approved by the President.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19

The taxpayer makes its Form 990 available to the public by retaining a copy at its place of business. The Form 990 is likewise published on the internet at www.guidestar.org. The organization's financial statements, governing documents and conflict of interest policy are not ordinarily made available to the public, but, if requested, will be provided at management's discretion.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X

The foundation adopted guidance that clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement. This guidance provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can only be recongized in the financial statements if the position is "more-likely-than-not" to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. the foundation has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; to determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it was nexus; and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered tax positions. The tax years ending 2011, 2012 and 2013 are still open to audit for both federal and state purposes. the foundation has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements.

reconciliation

The Birthright Israel Foundation does not receive its own standalone audited financial statements. The Foundation's financial operations are reported in consolidated financial statements. The statements include the Foundation's related entity, Birthright Israel Next, Inc. For purposes of Form 990 reporting, the Foundation's financial data as presented in Parts XI and XII represent just the Foundation's financial information as reported (on a standalone basis) in the financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0The Birthright Israel Foundation fortifies and grows financial support from North America, and broadens public awareness to ensure Taglit-Birthright Israel can flourish and touch generations to come. Working with our founding partners - the Government of Israel, and a global network of Jewish communities represented by the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), the Jewish Agency for Israel and Keren Hayesod - the Foundation is creating the infrastructure of support to firmly establish Taglit-Birthright Israel as an engine of Jewish community growth, engagement and continuity. Taglight-Birthright Israel began with a bold idea - offering a free, life-changing, 10 day trip to israel for young Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 26. Founded in 1999 by a remarkable group of committed Jewish philanthropists, Taglit-Birthright Israel strengthens jewish identity, builds a lasting bond with the land and people of Israel, and reinforces solidarity of the Jewish people worldwide. The trip is available to every young Jewish adult, from every strata of society, from every level of personal experience, from every facet and dimension of contemporary Jewish life. Some key facts about Birthright's primary program: $3,000 - The Average cost for one participant to go on a Birthright Israel trip 40,000 - The average number of young jewish adults we send to Israel each year 50 - the number of states from which our alumni hail 66 - the number of countries represented by Birthright Israel participants 400,000 - The number of young jewish adults who have participated worldwide 51,000 - Birthright Israel is currently working towards an annual participation goal of 51,000 beginning the next few years.
