Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Ceu is based on the premise that human fallibility can be counterbalanced by the critical discussion of ideas and that this critical spirit can be sustained best in societies where citizens have the freedom to scrutinize competing theories and openly evaluate and change government policies. Ceu is one of the most densely international universities in the world. Its rare mix of nationalities, ethnicities, and cultures creates an ideal environment for examining such "open society" subjects as emerging democracies, transitional economies, media freedom, nationalism, human rights, and the rule of law. It also brings multifaceted perspectives to all aspects of community life.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Following ceu's mission, the special and extension programs (sep) provides a bridge between ceu and the open society instituate (osi), and a bridge between ceu and its target countries. To this end, sep offers programs for university professors, researchers, professionals, and adminstrators from central and eastern europe, the former soviet union, mongolia and other emerging democracies. Sep has three units: special projects office (spo), ceu summer university (sun), and curriculum resource center (crc). Sep works on three levels: transregional programs (those initiatives that are eligible applicants from all of our target countries); microregional programs (primarily focused on providing support to higher education regional projects in southeastern europe and central asia); and country specific projects. In addition, sep is now working with other emerging democracies as a part of ceu's globalization efforts. Sep provides the following services: making available the academic and physical resources of ceu for the benefit of its target countries and of osi's network programs, managing projects on behalf of osi (especially where such projects will benefit from cooperation with ceu), developing and supporting ceu's own outreach efforts, providing training and other technical assistance to support osi's work in capacity-building for higher education.spo supports all activities in higher education in central and eastern europe, former soviet union, central asia, mongolia, and south-east europe. It provides: administrative support to open society network institutions, expertise on project development and implementation, advice on higher education development and reform, evaluation and quality control, organization of seminars, workshops, and roundtables related to higher education topics. Sun organizes high level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary and innovative academic courses as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development in the social sciences and humanities. Courses involve distinguished international faculty (including ceu professors), and excellent advanced doctoral students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals as participants. While application from all over the world is encouraged, continued priority is given to applicants from central and eastern europe, the former soviet union and countries experiencing emerging democracies worldwide.crc is ceu's external and internal resource, consultancy, and training unit in curriculum development and related issues with a special emphasis on social science and the humanities. Crc's main goals are capacity building, providing targeted resources to selected academics, consultancy, as well as professional development in higher education. Crc provides training in course design; supporting and developing selected faculty through course development grants; organizing workshops, events and conferences that explore innovative trends within the curriculum development context; as well as preparing ceu's graduate students for successful teaching careers at universities in the region.
Activity 3
The open society archives (osa) at central european university is an archival laboratory. While actively collecting, preserving, and making openly accessible documents related to recent history and human rights, we continue to experiment with new ways to contextualize primary sources, developing innovative tools to explore, represent, or bridge traditional archival collections in a digital environment. Our approach to acquisition is increasingly proactive and inclusive, and we actively seek out non-traditional material, material previously marginalized based on its content, social origin, or form. At osa archivum, professional archival work is integrated with public programs, and our galeria centralis serves as the focal point of exhibitions, performances, film screenings, lectures, and seminars. Through all of these endeavors, we advocate: open access and transparency in public administration; equal rights to information; the ethical use of private data; open formats and open standards; and broad access to cultural heritage.
