Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To devote energy and effort to the design history, theory, and practice of urban architecture, planning, and design, the development of cities and urban development, the relationship between built objects and systems and the lives of people in cities.

To explore the themes of urban vitality, identity and culture. Located in lower manhattan, the museum is the only institution in this country devoted to the story of tall buildings past, present and future. Through exhibitions, collections, programs, and our website, the museum explores the role of tall buildings as objects of design, products of technology, sites of construction, investments in real estate, places of work and residence and powerful cultural symbols. The gallery is a work of contemporary architecture by roger duffy of skidmore, owings and merrill. Using the reflections of a mirror-polish stainless steel floor and ceiling, the design creates an impression of endless vertical towers.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Carol willis, president and director, and mark willis, a trustee, have a family relationship.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization's form 990 is prepared by an outside accounting firm. An electronic copy of the 990 is sent to the president who reviews it with her financial consultant. After their review is complete and all of their questions have been answered, an electronic copy of the 990 is sent to the board's audit committee for their review and approval, after which it is distributed to the entire board of directors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Each year, the museum distributes its conflict of interest statement to every officer and member of the board with a cover letter describing the positive action required by each member. Each member is required to sign the document and disclose any potential conflicts of interest. The chair of the board determines whether a conflict exists and will then review each conflict. If it is determined that an actual conflict of interest exists, the member will not be allowed to vote or be part of any decisions about such transactions.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The board of directors decides the compensation of the president at its annual meeting. This is done by obtaining form 990's of comparable organizations, salary surveys and approval by the board of directors. Documentation of compensation deliberations and decisions is in the minutes of the board meeting and the process last occurred in 2022.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The museum makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available upon request.
